About time I made a tut, and since I'm not good at sigs, I decided to contribute this.

Loch Ness
Level: Intermediate

This is what we’ll be making:
Posted Image

1. First, open up GIMP and make a new image. The size doesn’t matter too much, but I used 1024 x 768 px.
2. Double-click on the gradient tool. Select the Deep Sea gradient and leave the other settings to default.
3. Click in the center of your image and drag up to the top, holding down the Ctrl key at the same time (let go when you reach the top). This makes the gradient even. It should look like this:
Posted Image
4. Make a new transparent layer. Name it “Noise 1".
5. With “Noise 1" selected in your layers dialogue, go to Filters > Render > Clouds > Solid Noise. Use the following settings:
Posted Image
6. Set that layer to Burn. Now, go to Filters > Light Effects > Lighting Effects.
7. Use the following settings. MAKE SURE YOU DRAG THE BLUE DOT TO SOMEWHERE NEAR CENTER. This step is VERY IMPORTANT, it will “make your lake”. Hit “Ok” when you’re done:

Posted Image
8. Duplicate the “Noise 1" layer. Name the duplicate layer “Noise 2". Set that layer to Overlay. You should be beginning to see the lake:
Posted Image
9. Make a new transparent layer named “Light”. Your layers dialogue should now look like this:
Posted Image
10. Double-click on the gradient tool. Use the following settings:
Posted Image
11. With the gradient tool, click near the upper left corner of your lake and drag down to your lower right a little ways. You’ll have to experiment, but it should look something like this:
Posted Image
12. Set that layer to overlay.
13. There, you’re done! If you want to change the color, desaturate the blue layer and colorize it to your liking. And mess around with the levels on any of the layers if you want. Oh, and add a monster. :l:

Please post your results! If there are any mistakes in the tut or if you have any questions, please let me know. :h:

Thats cool looking

If you look at the middle, it kinda looks like it begins to shrink, then look to the top, and then back to the middle and it does it again! cool!

^^Anyone else see that?
Thanks Curly!

Yeah, I was making the tut, and I saw the lake shrinking and I was like O_O, lol, then I realized it was just an illusion. :w: Great results, everyone! Glad you like it. :l:

Hmmmm..... To me it doesn't resemble a lake so much, but... I think with some tweaking I make it the seashore, low tide, early in the morning.

I like "The Sheep-Ness Monster", very comcial.

Anyway, I get a result until I try it...just give me a day or so because I'm going somewhere in a few minutes.

No, you had it right. All you needed was to tweak the lighting and only have one noise layer and no gradient layer, and you'd have this:

Actually I meant water surface/underwater scene, like this:

with some fish or something on the dark part. Your beach is really cool, though! I can almost picture an island in the distance. :l:
