Hey!

It's been a while. :)

I was editing a logo for a template i'm using and I wanted to make the text match the grunged, rusty look of the rest of the template, of which you can see here:

Click

But of course, if you've made logos before, you know matching text to the rest of the graphic is VERY hard sometimes.

So I played around till I got this type of text. :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Knowledge Needed:
-The Layers Dialogue
-Selections
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First of all, download a good, grungy font. I like Base-2 from DaFont, but it's your choice. In the screenshots, i'll be using the cliche army font.

[*:2vb8kydx]Get out the image that you'll be using. In my case, it's this:
    Posted Image
[*:2vb8kydx]Next, add the text you want. Make sure your font is big and thick, otherwise this wont work.
    Posted Image
[*:2vb8kydx]Now right click on your font layer and click 'Alpha to Selection'.
    Posted Image
    [*:2vb8kydx]Select the gradient tool.
    Posted Image
[*:2vb8kydx]Go to the gradient tool options and click on the button that lets you choose your gradient. Choose brushed aluminum.
    Posted Image
[*:2vb8kydx]Now we get to the fun part. Go back to the image and select your text layer. It should still have an alpha to selection around it.
[*:2vb8kydx]Drag the gradient from the top to the bottom of the LAYER ITSELF. Do not start from the top of the image, start from the top of the layer boundary.
[*:2vb8kydx]You should now have something like this:
    Posted Image
[*:2vb8kydx]Moving on, click on your paintbrush tool. Set your foreground color to #bd2f2f.
    [*:2vb8kydx]Make a new layer.
[*:2vb8kydx]Select the "19 circle" out of your brushes in the paintbrush tool's options.
[*:2vb8kydx]Start putting random lines and dots on your new layer, inside and around where the text is.
[*:2vb8kydx]You should have something like this:
    Posted Image
[*:2vb8kydx]Go into the layers dialogue. Select your text layer, and press alpha to selection again.
[*:2vb8kydx]Now, in the image window, go to selection>>invert.
    [*:2vb8kydx]Click edit>>clear.
[*:2vb8kydx]You should have something like this:
    Posted Image
[*:2vb8kydx]Don't worry, we're not done yet!
[*:2vb8kydx]Next, make a new layer. Go to the image window and select filter>>render>>clouds>>plasma.
    [*:2vb8kydx]Go to layer>>colors>>desaturate.
[*:2vb8kydx]You should have something like this:
    Posted Image
[*:2vb8kydx]After that, right click on the dot layer and select alpha to selection. Go to select>>invert again.
[*:2vb8kydx]Select the layer with the plasma on it. Go to edit>>clear.
[*:2vb8kydx]You should now have your image, with text. The text'll have grey, rusty spots with red auras. Check it out:

And you're done!

Hope you liked it.

Are you acquainted with these two tutorials:?

http://gug.sunsite.d...ials/lorindol2/

The one on the Scott effect is of particular interest...it's what I use whenever I want to do rust.

I saw those, but they didn't work particularly well wth text. Thanks for pointing them out, though.

I like your tutorial. It's clear, simple and easy to do and the results are nice.

After I did Plasma and cleared around the brush selection, I merged the plasma layer down to the brush layer.

Then on that layer I did this: Filters> Noise > Pick.
My settings: Check Randomize, set randomization at 60, and repeat at 30. (It's not carved in stone, experiment.)

Then I did Alpha to selection on the text layer, switched to the rust layer, inverted and deleted. It scattered the rust a bit. You could even leave the rust uncropped and have it flaking around the text.

Thanks for the cool tut.
