Only those who know the secret will see the shark.

I can see a faint outline but it's hard to make it out as a shark. Probably because I'm half asleep :P.
Good job.

Telling a person the secret and actually showing them are two different things unfortunatly. Maybe the link below might help. :)

wow, that's really 3d!!!! How, pray tell, do you do that? I learned to free-view this stuff on (of Queen fame) Brian May's Soapbox because he is big into the stereo viewers and such.

cool!
I can usually see these things, but sometimes I have a hard time recognizing what the hidden shape is supposed to be unless I know what it is ahead of time. :P

Beautiful job on making that. I have a really hard time seeing what's in them.

If I cross my eyes just a little it usually pops out for me but I see the images indented instead of sticking out. Weird, I know, but at least I can see them that way.

I live a little dangerously then most. I put the palm of my left hand at the left temple of my face and right hand at the right temple of my face, take the pinkys (not sure the official name of this finger; lol) and press against the inner eye lids (part closest to nose) on each eye to force the eyes parallel. lol

You can also try to just move you head close to the screen and then slowly go back maintaining the paralle vision. :)

Exactly! Haha, I thought I was the only one who that happened too. In fact, I thought Magic Eyes were supposed to be indented, until a couple months ago when I accidentally did it 'properly' and saw the image 'stick out' like it should have. :p

Cool Magic Eye, though. I can easily see it 'indented', as explained, but I'm having trouble seeing it properly.

Oh, ha ha, I can only see them indented, and I didn't realize that's not how it was supposed to be. I mean, I know they usually say it's supposed to pop "out," but I could never get it to do that, and I can get it to indent really easily by crossing my eyes. I'll have to try harder to make my eyes more parallel so I can see it the right way.

Holy macerals, this is the first time I've done it right! lol. I always thought it was supposed to be indented too! (Getting close to the screen and focusing past it, then leaning back worked for me finally)

The 'right way' looks a lot more cool, it's easier to distinguish depth (for me atleast).
Now I wanna go back and look at all the other ones I've done wrong in my life now...oh man.
Sorry for any strong critiques, but I like to be critiqued as hard I possible, it's what makes me better, so I try to return the favor, lol.

Okay, I was determined to get this to work right, and I think I finally saw in the correct way. However, when I first saw it, the whole thing seemed blurry, but I could see this sort of blob thing popping out of the page somewhat. Then I finally got it to be in focus better, but it kind of hurt my eyes after a while. XD And I still probably wouldn't be able to tell what the thing was supposed to be if I didn't already know ahead of time.

Nice work! I'm a BIG stereogram fiend! The way I see them is to try and look "through" the computer screen and see what's on the wall behind it. You need to relax too and "get in the zone".

Here's a tutorial I prepared several years ago when I first got into GIMP. It's based on a tuturial prepared by one of my favorite stereogram creators, Gary Priester:

Cool tut and info here Fencepost. Very cool techniques for creating depthmaps at your link too.

For the pattern, to make it blend without noticeable seams, you have to know what width you want your pattern to be (say you choose the default 80px width). Your pattern has to be seamless along the x-axis. Just extra info. I like choosing a little wider widths up to 200px; to eaches own. :)

Thanks! You're absolutely correct about the patterns, but when I wrote the tutorial many moons ago, I didn't know much about graphics at all. It was a struggle to even get things to work "back in the day"! 8)
