NOTE: There's a tutorial on how to create this effect using GAP here by ccbarr however some individuals out there don't have, nor use gap so here's how you can create the spinning pole in Gimp.

Straight Pole: (Y axis changed)
Posted Image

Angled Pole: (X and Y axis changed)
Posted Image

Lets begin!

Part 1: (The Base)
First off make your base so were going to make the spinning stripe pole above. So go ahead, and download, and use this image.
Posted Image

Import it into Gimp in a new document, and copy it, now close that document, and make a new one at 400x400.

Now select your "Bucket Fill Tool" and change it from "FG Color Fill" to "Pattern Fill", then choose the pattern you copied which is the top left as seen in screenshot below.
Posted Image

Now fill your layer with that pattern, and you now have your Base, so change the layer name to "Base".
Posted Image

NOTE: The pattern is optional, you can make the base however you want.

Now I would recommend for you to save your base/image.

Part 2: (The Pole)
Now duplicate your base image, and go to Filters/Map/Map Object.
Now change Map to: to Cylinder.
Posted Image

Now click the Cylinder Tab, and you can adjust the settings you want for it here.
Posted Image

Next click the Orientation Tab and here is where you can be very creative, now if you want a straight pole, then don't mess with the X or Z axis, if you do then feel free, but don't mess with the Y axis just yet as we want that at 0 for now, because that'll make our spinning pole.
Posted Image

Part 3: (The Animation)
Right now you should have your base image at the bottom layer names "Base" and above that layer should be your pole.

Now move the base layer up, and duplicate it a bunch of times.

So go to your second layer above your first pole frame.

Now go back to Filters/Map/Map Object

Now if you used the X or Z axis you'll haft to save each pole image you make individually, cause when you apply the filter above that layer of your base you'll get a pole inside your pole, as seen below.
Posted Image

If you didn't use the X or Z axis then you won't get that.

So now with that being said I'm going to assume your making a straight pole. Now here where math comes into play. From 0-180 we need to do multiples. I did multiples of 20, which I didn't need to go to 180, if I did I would of got a pause in the animation, so I went to 160. For multiples of 10, you would go to 170, for multiples of 5 it's be 175, and 2 it's be 178.

So each frame of a multiple of 20 would be.
0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140, 160

It helps a lot by naming the frame of what you changed your Y axis to, so you know where your at encase you forget.

So now make your animation, and last thing you would need to do is crop it, and/or give it a background. However that's just optional.

very nice tute.
I have it finished right down to multiples of 20 then I saved it. I have no idea what to do next cuz I don't know anything about making frames.... Are you going to add that part to the tute? :P

Molly, is your pole in layers? That would be your frames. Just save it as an animation.
This is what my pole layers look like.

Here is my pole. Nice tut, Mike. I reversed the spin of my pole by making Y = -20, -40, etc.

Okay, I now have the 8 poles made from 20 to 160. Now how do I make it spin? I don't see a wind up key anywhere.... :P

Woo Hoo, my first animation with frames. Thanks to Mike who wrote the tutorial and thanks to O for showing me how to make frames.

Thank you 2-ton. Tutorials IMO are for giving people ideas to do other stuff. They're a springboard to the next step. :)

I consider myself lucky to just manage the tutorials, let alone go above and beyond!
