Anyway did you use the default 7 image Viewer or a dedicated program to browse imagine files?
With dedicated viewer you may have a "open with" voice in the viewer file menu..pointing that to gimp.exe you may open the same image in gimp.
PS not sure if all viewer have that option Xnview has it

Sorry.
There are context menu editors (google those words (without the final "s")) which may allow you to enter it manually.

I had the exact same problem and a search led me to this thread. It gave me an idea to test out and sure enough it worked.
I'm running Windows XP and just installed GIMP 2.6.8. I previously had 2.x.x version and uninstalled it prior to installing the latest. But I lost my valuable "Edit with GIMP" context menus. Here's how I got them back:
- 1. From an Explorer window, go to Tools-> Folder Options
- 2. Go to the File Types tab
- 3. Select the file extension (ex: JPG) that you want the "Edit with GIMP" context menu to appear for
- 4. Click the Advanced button
- 5. Click the New button
- 6a. Enter "Edit with the GIMP" for the Action (or whatever text you want) and browse to the GIMP exe for the Application Used to Perform Action.
- 6b. For this to work with filenames containing spaces, after you select the application in step 6a, enter "%1" after the path to the app executable. [Yes, include the quotes - that's what encapsulates the spaces in the filename.]
- 7. Ok out of everything and test.
- 8. Repeat steps 1 thru 7 for each file type you want to get the context menu on (ex: GIF, PNG, BMP, JPG)
I'm attaching an image of what the series of windows and dialog boxes should look like at step 6:

Cheers!

I was searching for this when I saw your post. Maybe you have solve this already, but anyway;) I found how just few pages later. Take any text editor you have, paste that text below and save it as .reg not .txt . (Hopefuly you work in windows with all extensions display as default in folder view;) After saving it (anywhere you like) click the reg file as administrator, and click yes to the prompts. You don't even have to restart, "Edit with Gimp" will appear in your context-menu. This key is for all user in vista (thats why I made it for the root)
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\Edit with Gimp]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\Edit with Gimp\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\GIMP-2.0\\bin\\gimp-2.6.exe\" \"%1\""
Note; mine is gimp-2.6.exe, rename this to match the version you have. Also, this is the path it has
in my drive;
C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\bin\gimp-2.6.exe
if you have to, rename all to match. If there's more directories to yours path, add them and don't forget the double back-slash as shown above.
Peace
Ghis
edit;
And I just found this little app; http://defaultprogramseditor.com/
I wanna see if I can make an "Copy and send to Gimp" context-menu element with it, or anything;)

I don't have time for this but I'd like to fiddle with some program which allows to edit the section of context menu which is common to all files e.g. Open With. There's a lot of clutter in windows context menus and Windows 7 is not better in that area.

Use "Default Programs Editor". http://defaultprogramseditor.com
Easy as can be--no registry editing, no reinstalling Gimp--just ran the program and it worked. I even got to choose to include the Gimp icon with it. See the screenshot below. The girl makes this post even more helpful, no?

By the way, I think it was installing Picasa that killed the "Edit with Gimp" in the first place.

I was having this problem too. "Default Programs Editor" worked like a charm.
My PNGs still had the "Edit in Gimp" option. But, I wanted this for my JPGs and GIFS again. In the above program, I just went to "File Type Settings" -> "Context Menu" -> then searched ".png". Double clicked that, and copied all of the info to to use for JPGs and GIFs (you don't need to do this though if you just know the Program Path).
It's also nice to add the little Gimp Icon too. :D
