This tutorial will explain the steps that were taken in the creation of this grunge pack.
1)Open up the GIMP
2)Create a new image (500 by 500 pixels) with a white background
3)Click on "dialouges>brushes"
4)Click on the "create new brush" button (it looks like a sheet of paper)
5)Enter the following settings (it's really) up to you.
6)Double click on the brush icon in the toolbar
7)Click on "use color from gradient" and choose the gradient shown below
8)Brush across the image and fill it up as shown
9)Select "Filters>Map>Displace" and displace the layer on itself
10)Desaturate the image (Layer>Colors>Desaturate)
12)Select a small roundish portion of the image
13)Copy the selection
14)Click "file>new image" (should match size of the copied part)
15)paste the cutout onto a new layer
16)Click "Layer>Transparency>Alpha to Selection"
17)Click "Select>Feather">
18)Feather the selection by a decent amount of pixelness
19)Invert the selection (ctrl+I)
20)Clear the selection (ctrl+K) untill there is no definent cutoff on the edges
21)Flatten the image
22)Set the mode to greyscale
23)Save the image in the brush folder (C://Program Files/gimp/share/2.0/brushes) or (/usr/share/gimp/2.0/brushes/ on the penguin) as abstract1.gbr
24)Repeat steps 12-23 a couple of times
25)Create a new image of 500 by 500 pixels with a white bg
26)Open the brushes dialouge box (Dialouges>Brushes)
27)Click the refresh button
28)Select one of the brushes that you just created and start filling up the image, switching brushes regularlly
29)Re open the layers dialouge (ctrl+L)
30)Right click on the BG layer (should be only layer)
31)Select "Add alpha channel"
32)Select "edit layer attributes"
33)Type in a bunch of jibberish (not a necessary step, but it's fun enough)
34)Create a new layer and move it under that)
35)Select "Filters>Render>Clouds>Solid Noise"
36)Max out on everything exept for random seed (thar'd be impossible)
37)Set the brushed layer to overlay, and duplicate it
38)select the bottom layer and motioin blur it at 0 degrees with a maxed out length (in this one you really don't need to do it in the other direction)
39)Bumpmap the layer on itself with the following settings (or whatever you choose)
40)Sharpen the bump mapped layer a bit. (or a large amount, it's up to you)
41)You should have something like this (If it's too light then make a new layer on overlay and select everything then "edit>copy visible" and paste it on that layer)
42)Sharpen the image a bit
42)Repeat steps 12-23 only with bigger selections and larger feathering amounts (also more ctrl+K ing)
43)Delete the brushes created in the beginning (unless you really want them, but why would you?)
Feel free to realease brush pack out on the net with your newly created grungestract brushes in there, but just don't claim the method of creation to be your own.
On the lines of giving credit, a large influence on the developement of these brushes was a failed attempt at imitating MobiusOne's grungestract pack. I have yet to figure out how he did his, but still.
