Hello people, today I will make my first tutorial, how to make a potion!. But first, I would like to give credit to fencepost for creating this tutorial: http://www.gimptalk....p?a=v&t=187&f=8 , which taught me how to make the glass orb for my potion. To do this you must have a basic understanding of the "Map Objects" tool, "Selections" tool, and "Layers", Okay lets get started:

-----

CREATING POTIONS IN GIMP

-----

1. Create a new image, 400 X 400.

-----

2. Rename your background layer "Container" and add 3 transparency layers and rename them "Liquid", "Cork" and "Top".

Posted Image

-----

3. Now with the "Container" layer selected, go to Filters >> Map >> Map Objejct and set the settings like this:

Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

leave the "Orientation" tab "Rotation" settings all zeroes

-----

4. Now go to Filters >> Colors >> Color To Alpha, and click on the white box, now in the Html Notation box type in b7b7b7.

Posted Image

Now for a better effect, duplicate your "Container" layer and merge it down.

your image should look like this so far:

Posted Image

-----

5. Now Select your "Liquid" layer and grab your "Rectangle Selection" tool (Tools >> Selection Tools >> Rect Select) and select about two thirds of your "Container", mine is 246 pixles high (MAKE SURE YOUR SELECTION COVERS THE ENTIRE WIDTH OF THE IMAGE!!!), like this:

Posted Image

Fill the selection with the color you want your liquid to be, again, make sure your "Liquid" layer is selected.

-----

6. Deselect your layer (Select >> None). Now go to Filters >> Map >> Map Objects, and set the settings like in step 3, but in the "Orientation" tab, set the "Z" in "Rotation" to 9.0 like this:

Posted Image

Your picture should now look like this:

Posted Image

-----

7. Now select your "Top" layer and fill it with solid white, Repeat step 3 but instead of "Map To: Sphere" drop down and select "Map To: Cylinder". Set Theese settings:

Posted Image

Now repeat step 4 with your "Top" layer.

Your image should now look like this:

Posted Image

-----

8.Okay, now we are almost done! Select your "Cork" layer and take a dark-yellow-orange color, for example, try #d29900. fill your whole "Cork" layer with it and Go to Filters >> Map >> Map Object and "Map to Cylinder" with theese setings:

Posted Image

-----

9. Congratulations! you are done!!! Lets add the final touches:

Put the layers in this order (top to bottom) :

"Top"

"Cork"

"Container"

"Liquid"

-----

10. It should look fairly realistic now. this is my result:

The outcome is nice, good job.

You should try to add the tutorial on adding a rippling water effect somehow.

I have one thing to say in response to this tutorial:

"I'll get you my pretty! And your little dog too!"

Heh, just that word potion made me think if the Wicked Witch on the Wizard of Oz.

Nice tutorial, nice results. :l:

To geta liquidy ripple to the liquid layer i used the bases of this tutorial you dont need to do the black layer, shrink by 2 pixels or the shine layer.

hmmm... id guess ur one of those people who likes to experiment (which is good if u do a little experimenting)... a little too much :a:.

theese are your mistakes.

[*]U did not set the light correctly

[*]U did not select the whole canvas of the image

[*]U did not set the cylynder cap faces like in the tut

Sorry for criticising so much, i just wanted to show u where u went wrong
:l:, No hard feelings

Hmm, when I started, mine had a black ring around it. I don't know what that is, or means. I followed all your settings, and it remained. I am continueing on trying to follow the steps, but they are a bit tough for me; I'm fairly new to GIMP.

How do I select Layers?I'm kinda new here and also each time I click on container and do the Map object part,it shows a new window with a sphere but with black stuff around it and it has only one layer.Maybe it's because I don't know how to select or somthing like that?
