(deviantart version [here])

If you make camp in a troll forest, you better be prepared for things noticing you ...

GIMP 2.6.1, from scratch. This is a real quickie -- took about an hour, was made to contribute at least something to the Biweekly art competition.

This is done in a technique identical to pastel crayon drawing and also done with an animated crayon brush (similar to [this] and [this] image). This means you should rather try to take in the overall impression of the image than focus on details -- because the details are not meant to be very precise.

Day version: [here].

this so reminds me of the part in The Hobbit where Bilbo tries to be a burglar and the dwarves all get captured  great job, colors really help the atmosphere, and I like the hand-painted/drawn look.

I do like it, however im not sure if it your best work, looks like it was done fairy quickly. The fire is superb i love the colours, i also like the men with the little red hats, are the gnomes? overall i like it but i would like to know how long you spent on it.

There is text under the picture ... ;)

The little men with hats are not gnomes but Tomtar, actually. The Tomte is a mythological being from Scandinavian folklore.

It's actually the other way around. The Scandinavian Tomte (or "nisse", which was really the same thing) with his long beard and cap (and which was often helpful as long as he was not angered, taking care of people's farms when they were asleep) was used as a basis when various companies (notably Coca Cola) pushed forth the "Santa Claus" character for their commercials in the '30s. Santa Claus as a fat grown man with white beard and red clothes is really not that old. Anyway, because of this "genetic link" Santa is still called Jultomten (the Chrismas-tomte) in Swedish (I guess he has a similar name in the other Scandinavian countries?) In the same way, Santa does not have "elfs" to help him in our tradition, but they are called (correctly, hehe) "nissar", which are really just another name for "tomte". Heck, "Elfs" are from a completely different mythos, dammit.

Nisse and Tomte are different words for the same things. These beings could be called either one. That said, the guys help Santa may be called "nissar" these days, but the ones living out in the forest were almost always referred to as Tomtar (or even Tomtenissar, a combination of the two words!).
