[Sorry if this is a double post.]

Hey guys and gals [and fellow Gimp users]. As some of you may know, to the average person, we've really only had access to Gimp 2.2.11, a very out-dated version of Gimp. There have been methods of getting newer versions of Gimp but that involved compiling the source or using Macports, something we, as mere photo editors and the like, probably lack the knowledge to do.

Well this morning I found someone who compiled the latest version and uploaded it to his website (http://www.nasendackel.de/gimp-en/). He also made an Aqua version (no X11) but I wouldn't recommend it. The aqua version not only looks bad but is less functional. You can't drag photos onto the dock icon to have them open with it and I can't figure out how to make add it to the list of options for photos to open with.

The new Gimp version adds many things, such as scalable brushes, the healing brush and a more intuitive menu layout.

If you like it please Digg my digg.com submission (located here) so that even more Mac users who use Gimp will find this.

Here's a screenshot (click it for a bigger version):

You should be able to drag-n-drop a file onto the Toolbox and have it open as a new image. You should also be able to drag-n-drop a file onto an open image window and have it open as a new layer. (Let us know if this doesn't work.)

I tried dragging it into the toolbox and it locked up GIMP. I had to force quit it. Dragging the image onto an open image also seemingly locks up GIMP (I got the rainbow cursor of doom).

Ouch! That may have something to do with this discussion on the GIMP developers mailing list. Perhaps the author of that message is who you obtained the package from. If so, you should see if a new package appears in the next day or so (one compiled with D-Bus disabled).

Good luck.

Well the X11 version works flawlessly (I am using the X11 version in my screenshot). It's the aqua version that's buggy. If you aren't familiar with Mac OS X I'll try and make this clear. X11 is Apple's port of the X Windowing system. This, when compiling Gimp for Mac OS X, is used by default. Many people don't like the X11 use though as it's not OS X-like (IE the menu's are in the windows, not in the top task-bar as native aqua applications are), so to counter this some projects have opened with an aqua-native port (no X11 required). These typically go by a different name, the most famous being Seashore. These are also much less functional than GIMP (X11 is requires for many of GIMPs features, so you'd have to do some major reworkings to use the native feature and retain these features).

So what this guy is trying to do is also make a native version of Gimp for OS X. He's managed to keep all of the features and the like, so it's essentially the GIMP 2.4rc3, the only difference is that it's extremely unstable and doesn't manage picture formats very well.
