After clicking this menu a new Filter window will appear, almost like following:

You simply select Sphere from the list in front of label Map to:.

Now click button OK and the Globe is ready, as shown here:

You may copy this new layer form Layers' tab and paste in desired image or even export to desired image format and reuse it in other applications. To have its transparency maintained, we suggest you to export it to PNG (Portable Network Graphics) image format.

I hope you found it interesting

Here's one I made in about 10 minutes using the Map Object tool. The idea came from a Photoshop tutorial I came across on the web, which is much more detailed and looks more realistic than this, but for what I did in such a short amount of time, I'm impressed. The tutorial I'm referring to uses the globe as a "display case." I'll develop this further and see where I land. I'll post my steps when I get there.

Edit: It's actually supposed to be transparent. I should have saved it as a .png. I'll do that tonight when I get home. Also, this image is made of only two layers, about 3-4 easy steps! :l:

Nice job, Blur! Looks like you're catching on. Welcome to the boards!

Ali, I'm gonna make an addition to your globe tutorial, to show how I created the transparent globe above. Rather than start a new thread, I figured it was ok to add here, but you can move it if you feel it needs to be separate.

Ok, here we go.

Ali's cereal 3D cereal bowl tutorial 3D Bowl Tutorial got me to thinking (now that's where most of my problems begin :w:). How can I modify that to create this? Found Here

Well, here's my tentative findings. I won't share everything at this point because I want my final product to be special :l: Let's get started.

These steps are very straightforward, but you need to have a basic understanding of the GIMP and using the Map Object tool.

1. Open up the GIMP and start out with a transparent layer about 400X400 pixels in size.

Next, we need to somehow create a color scheme that the Map Objects tool can "act" on that will give a transparent or glassy ball type of effect. Note: this step took me a long time to figure out, but it serves our purposes for now, or at least until I figure out a better way.

2. To do this:

A. Set your foreground color to white.
B. Set your Gradient Blend settings to match the picture below. To access the gradient settings, double-click the gradient button.

Posted Image

3. Put your gradient tool cursor in the middle of the layer (ie. at 200 X 200) and drag down to the bottom right-hand corner. Your layer should look like this:

Posted Image

This will give us the basis of the transparent globe.

4. Now, within this same layer, grab your rectangular selection tool and create two rectangles and fill them a color, pattern, or gradient. I chose a solid color, but it's your choice. Your layer should now look like this:

Posted Image

5. Deselect the rectangles.
6. Now, go to Filters | Map | Map Object and set the settings like this:

Posted Image

7. For this tutorial, nothing else needs to be set. Click "OK" and your object is complete!

Posted Image

Save it as XCF if you want to play with it later or flatten the image and save it as the bitmap of your choice. Well, Ali, I told you it was pretty easy! Hope y'all found this helpful.

By the way, this tutorial isn't finished yet. We've only just begun :l: We've got to make the kiosk orb found in the tutorial I listed above.

Happy GIMPing.

Good job, Aaron. What did you use for the hazy, cloud effect?

I used your tute and a few plug-ins..namely EyeCandy 4000.
I can now do an entire transparent globe with water in it.. but I am still not happy with the result.. will see what I can come up with.

I LOVE THIS PROGRAM!

What part of your globe don't you like?

Maybe we can help you fix it.

Art, your tutorial is streight and understandable for newbies.
Great, really great results, and great use of map-object.

I dont know how I skipped above post, I noticed it after about 5 hours of suring and filtering posts at forum.

Now let me know when it is complete, so that we can split the post as a separate tutorial topic.

Am impressed, you think different.

My result using yur tutorial, is attached.

Thanks for the comments.

You have absolutely no idea! I'm a different one altogether :w:

You did very well on yours.

The more I think about this, the more ideas that come to mind. I will be KING of the ORBS by the time I'm done! The biggest hurdle I'm having is developing a more realistic glass. That's a toughy, but this is the fun part about learning.

That's beautiful, Ali! Looks very realistic. I haven't worked on mine lately so I'm intrigued as to which approach you took to get the block inside the globe. Lovely.
