>> Hi...

Im going to show you how to make a brushe that looks like this:

Posted Image

>>Start with a blank canvas about 250 by 150 (any size you want your brush to be)

Posted Image

>>Grab your favorite font and write anything on the canvas (im using battlefront from dafont.com)

Posted Image

>> Then go to Filters : Distorts : Iwarp and set the settings like this:

Posted Image

>> Now mess around with the text until you see something you like..

Posted Image

>> Now go to image : Mode : Greyscale to turn your image into a greyscale..

Posted Image

>> Now go to image : Flatten image..

Posted Image

>> Now go to File : Save As and save it as a gbr in the brushes folder...when it says description type what you want to call the brush...

hehe no image on this one im afraid..

>> Once you have saved it go to brushes then click on refresh and your brush will be in there...

>> finished result...

I likey dude! In fact, I think that you might even be able to do some grunge stuff with those brushes, once you apply some gradient maps, and other filter stuff. I might look into making an addon if you don't mind. :)

Yeah, a new page - (basically just click File > New.)

Did you save to your brushes folder? It should be located under C:\\Program Files\\Gimp\\Share\\2.0\\brushes

when i flatten the image, the layer turns dark gray, and so it can't really be used as a brush... in yours it remains transparent. how did you do that?

I believe the background will take on the color of the current background color swatch when flattened. So, make sure that the background color swatch is set to white before flattening. Let me know if this doesn't work.

BTW, welcome to the boards!

Great tut, especially for your first one. This might help some people: If your brush won't pop up after you saved it in the gimp brush folder, just close gimp and open it again and the brush you made will be there.

Simple, yet useful. I've used Iwarp before, and I've created brushes before, but not together. Awesome! :l:
pixkid@macmini~$ open -a Gimp.app
bash: you want fries with that
pixkid@macmini~$ echo No thank you, I am on a diet.
bash: you make me feel unloved with your excuses
pixkid@macmini~$ echo What? Are you insinuating that I do not eat your food? When did shells ever execute commands relevant to cooking?
bash: shells duh ever think of seafood
pixkid@macmini~$ echo No fair, stop searching puns, you have Lynx and Google to use!
bash: ugh you humans are so annoying
bash: logout

Excellent idea and execution. Nice explanation too.
Interestingly enough I had been thinking about making a specific brush but I had no idea how to go about it.
I intend on making a brush that will serve as my artistic stamp/signature. We'll see how it turns out. :h:

Mandee, are you asking how to access the folder that holds all of your brush files?
(Zig21, your problem may be helped out in this response, too.)
Once you've saved the brush file (*.gbr), in order for you to use it the file needs to be in your brushes folder.
If you use Windows, this is how you can access it.
You'll need 2 windows; the first will be showing the brush file you want to move, the second we will use to "explore".
The path you will most likely follow after selecting your hard drive is this:
Program Files>GIMP>Share>gimp>2.0>brushes

Now simply click and drag the *.gbr file from the first window into the brushes folder.

If GIMP is open when you do this, you'll need to restart it for it to recognize the new brush.

I hope this wasn't too long-winded of me and that it is clear enough to help either of you.

EDIT: Another way to create the image or what have you as a brush is to use the script.
Script-Fu>Selection>To Brush

Simple as that. :D
