    i managed to find the solution - simply marked the background with magic wand and then selected Layer – Transparency – Add AlphaChannel. And finally Edit – Clear

    my company is celebrating 5th anniversary this month, that's all.

    at any rate, i kind of solved the problem - i learned about superimposing images on videos in Premiere Elements, so it turns out my question was really not GIMP related
