ok let's start with simple things...
first if u dont have any brushes you cant work so go and download as many as you want http://www.deviantart.com(oh and make sure they are for GIMP)

next...

go to GIMP and reverse the bg/fg color (so it is background=black and foreground=white)
make a new file sized 400x120 or 400x150 (the smaller the best)
ok now you should see this...

now select one of your brushes...I'll choose Abstract 07 - 3
ok now play around with it...(click many times dont click and hold)
after you think it is good for you...stop
this is what you'll almost see...(the outcome might be different depending on the brush you are using)

now choose your render...if u dont have any go to http://www.planetrenders.com and download some render packs...this is how a render should look like

Posted Image

now make a new layer over this
Posted Image
and pick a color you want and fill the new layer with the bucket tool
I picked the color from his thingy in the front part of his helmet
this is what you should see now

Posted Image

now make a new layer and post in the render after you have resized it so that it fits the sig well...(to resize the render select it and press the scale image button in the image menu)

Posted Image

now press Ctrl+L and this menu will come out Posted Image
(the menu in this pic is in greek so u probably dont understand anything but I'll explain)

now select the middle layer and select one of the many options in this button Posted Image

now this is what you should see...

you're done..all that's left is the text...:teeth
ENJOY and make a good use of this tutorial

Well, i think the only people that would be able to really understand what it is, would have to be above a newb level, at gimp. Because, it's greek, they won't get it. And you should really download the version, from the official gimp site. Not from download.com. They screw things up a lot there.
But, for a beginner tutorial, it's really not that bad. Except, that you may wanna get above the level that you're teaching, y'know?
