Make a Userbar in The GIMP

I find it way easier to make a diagonal line pattern that's 3x3 and make a new transparent layer after we blend the gradient. Then fill that layer with the pattern and set it to 55 opacity and flatten! :h: I've made userbars before and the elipse at the top to make it look 3d is something to behold! I would have never thought of that!!! Also,
Simple userbar animation tut: (Just to be convenient)
1: Open starting userbar.
2: Duplicate it's layer 2 or 3 times.
3: Open new userbar.
4: Repeat steps 1 and to with the new one.
5: Repeat with as many userbars as you want! No gap required!

Glad you like the tutorial guys.
@ God Of The Red Moon,
Yes, the 3D look is rather cool. I am going to add to the tutorial as I have found some great other methods also on making a userbar instead of just using scanlines. Oh, I also made an 'Animate Your Userbar' tutorial. It can be found here.

Awesome tut! I made a small change on mine and added 1x1 drop shadows on the text after stroking the text, just to give it a little more definition. Here's the results:
this was the first attempt following the tutorial
these are the other ones I did afterward

By default, I don't think GIMP comes with the option of a 3 colour gradient (i.e.: with colours you can specify yourself), though if you look though the gradients dialogue then you'll find something similar with 3 colours. Failing that, you could make your own or download some (don't ask me where from because the default gradients have been enough for me)

nvm that but how do you get the pic to blend in with the background...instead of using color to alpha

I think you mean "How do I get the image to have a transparent background". I this case, it has to be a .PNG image with no background. It is more commonly called a 'render'. The image of Wilbur (the GIMP mascot thing on my tutorial) is a .PNG image with no background. Save it and open it in GIMP and you will see lots of checkerboard patterens behind it. This means its transparent. To make you own images like this, I like to follow this tutorial.
