Here is a little tutorial I made. Hope you like it.

[*]Open a new picture. Size and color of the Background layer don't really matter.
For this example I chose 300 x 300 px transparent.

Open a new layer. transparent.
Choose Filters - Render - Clouds - Solid Noise
Detail = 2, X = 4 Y = 2

[*]Next use Filters - Distorts - Waves
Amplitude = 10, Phase = 0 Wavelength = 33

[*]To give it the metal shine, open Layer - Colors - Curves
The more curves you make, the more shine

Example with 3 curves

Example with 5 curves

[*]At the End you just add some color.
For this you open Layer - Colors - Colorize

Finished !

There are many ways of getting to this metallic shine. I've made some more examples for you.

great, love to see the result.

I've just tried out Filter - Colours - Map - Adjust FG-BG Using germanflag_smooth
It looks kind of fireburst.

Well that looks great ! That's a nice idea with them square pattern.

On the solid render I used

Detail 2
X = 4
Y = 2

Well Omega ... what can one say :l:
