OK, lets begin. Firstly, make a new image. When The GIMP asks you about the size and everything. Put your settings like this.

Just incase you can't see that, I'll list them here.
Settings:
Width: 6 pixels
Height: 6 pixels
Fill with: Transparency
Leave all the other settings on default.
Your image will open up and it will be just a small dot on the screen. Go to:
View ---> Zoom ---> 16:1 (1600%)
This will zoom in on your image allowing you to see it clearer. You may have to enlarge the window in order to fit it all in. Do this by simply draging upwards on the bar on the top of the window where the minimize, maximize and close buttons are placed.

After that, grab your Pencil Tool. You can find it on The GIMP's tool box window. It looks like this.

Now select the brush that comes under the name of:
Circle (01) (1 x 1)

Now brush about on your image untill it looks like this. Make sure you get it exactly on the squares in this pattern. You don't want it to be all weird.

Then go to, File ---> Save as and type in "Scanlines.pat" into the file name box. Click on Save. You will than be asked for a description. Type in something like "Scanlines" and click OK.
Find where you saved the pattern and copy it. You will then need to paste it into The GIMP's pattern file. This is similiar to loading brushes. If you are having trouble finding your patterns folder and you are using Windows, try looking here:
C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\patterns
Paste the scanlines there. If you have The GIMP loaded, close it and open it again. Now when you want to use your scanlines, select the paint bucket tool and click the "Pattern" option, shown here.

Select your scanlines and you are free to use them in your latest image, signature or Userbar.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial.
