I stumbled on this by accident, maybe somebody else has already done something like it.

Basically, you do a repeating gradient (set to triangle repeat) at an angle with normal setting, then do another gradient this time with it set to darken only and do it smaller so that it intersects at a diagonal with the first. And this is what you get:
