About orange box: It's a package of games for PC. Some of the best games.
Thanks for this tutorial! It's probably the only thing I'm going to do with gimp for the most part :p

what do you mean when you say ................
"5. Make a new transparent layer, and place it underneath the text layer. Select the color you want your outline to be as the foreground or background color. I chose black. Then go to edit > fill with bg/fg color, whichever has the color you want your outline to be. Then go to select > none, and there you have it! "
how do you make a new layer ?
I'm sorry for being a noob , but help!

Select the color you want your outline to be as the foreground or background color. I chose black. Then go to edit > fill with bg/fg color,
when i fill it it fills the entire text space

I know this was posted ages ago but trying anyway.
I have tried numerous times to follow the instructions, and like Nick awesome the whole text gets filled with the new colour. I am also having trouble placing new transparent layer under text because you cant move it but if you select it to be the same size as old layer, then it should be under, right? Except it still doesnt work. The easier method of stroking selection works but comes out a lil blury.

So first off, I have my arbitrary background. This is on the background layer.

Then I use the text tool to put some text in. This is on a text layer above the background layer.

When you create a new layer, the layer is placed above your current layer. You can click and drag the layer to move it in the layers dialog later. For now I'm going to select the background layer, and click new layer.

Since my background layer was my active layer, my new layer was created between my text and my background layer.

I'm going to right click on my text layer in the layers dialog and choose alpha to selection. Or I can just hold down alt and click the text layer thumbnail in the layers dialog.

Now I'm going to make sure my new layer between the text and background is active. Again, activate that layer by clicking on it in the layers dialog.
I'm going to right click in the image, Select -> Grow. Gonna grow it by 4 pixels.

Then I just click and drag the black square in the tools box over to the image.

And here is my final result:

Went and lowered the opacity on the black layer to around 35 for aesthetic reasons.

1. Original type.
2. Alpha to Selection - Gradient fill (used one of the presets for this, Gold)
3. Alpha to selection - Grow selection - new layer - fill and place behind (as above)
4. Alpha to selection (used outline layer) - new layer fill - move layer (for hard drop shadow)
5. Alpha to selection (used outline layer) - feather selection - Fill - Move - Adjust Opacity (for soft shadow)
6. Alpha to selection (type, not outline) - shrink selection - Feather - Invert - Airbrush highlights shadow etc - Alpha to selection (type) - invert - clear - Adjust opacity.
I know there are drop shadow tools etc but I find you can have much more control this way.
Like I say just rough examples quickly done.
