In this tutorial, we are going to make a button
1: Start out with a new canvas, the size doesn't matter as long as the width and height are the same amount

2: Select the elliptical regions tool and make a perfect circle by holding down the shift key
Posted Image
3:select the paint box tool and paint your selection with any color you want

4: Now create a new layer, hold down the control key, (with elliptical regions tool still selected) and subtract your selection untill you get this:

HINT:You may have to zoom out for better results when subtracting the selection

5: Now go to select>feather by 50

6: Select the paint bucket and paint your selection in white

If you want you can stop here, but for better results, keep going.

7: Select your circular layer
Posted Image
8: Go to select>select by color, and click outside of your circle and go to select>inverse
Posted Image
9:Now repeat step 4 and 5 accept do it on on the left of your button, (thats what I'm calling the circle)paint it in with black instead of white, and set the layers mode to overlay.

and there's your sweet button
:w:

Pictures aren't showing up *pouts* just my luck... I can post a picture of a button I made myself without this tutorial lol and maybe then I could say here how I made it after checking that it isn't the same though I believe it's different and since I've only seen one outcome I can't tell whether the outcomes are similar or not... so bear with me... My Button that I made:
