Very agrivating. I just wasted the past hour trying to render a picture and it didn't work. I used the path the entire time like 5 times around the image and nothing.

Would you care to be a little more specific? We might be able to help you.

Did you click the button at the end to convert the path to a selection?
Did you cut or copy while the selection was active? If so did you paste this anywhere?

The method described in this tutorial works, therefore I can only assume you missed something somewhere.

I closed the thing. I just can't get the path to start looking like marching ants. I already did close, enter, invert, but it doesn't work.

Enter? Where does it say enter?

When you have your path complete and closed go to the Tool Options dialog (it should be in the bottom half of the main toolbox, or you can access it via the Dialogues menu instead). When the path tool is active there should be a button on this Tool Options dialog marked "Path to Selection" (or something like that anyway). Click this to make a selection out of the path.

Whe you go to the path tool do the following.

First make sure your alpha channel for the image is set to transparent.

Then, make sure the button "Design' is clicked. Then you place your points around the object you want to render and you end at the point you began with.

Click on the edit button and adjust the path lins to fit the outline of the image.

Click on Selection to path. Here is where the marchin ants appear.

Then go to the select pulldown menu and click on invert.

The go to the Edit menu and click on cut. anything outside of the path you created will be removed and you should see the checked background indicating that it's transparent.

Here are some of my examples.

@ jonnahradcliffe:
It's possible though might not be the best option. You might want to look at this tutorial.
