It has probably been almost 8 years ago that I was asked to take some promo shots for a band that has long since disbanded. This is the lead singer.

These were originally shot on conventional black ans white film and hand printed in the darkroom I don't have any longer. Can't remember what the film was, probably Tri-X developed in Rodinal, for those of you who know about such stuff. The third image was printed using "the panty-hose technique". You take an embroidery hoop and stretch one or more layers of women's hose across it, then wave it around under the enlarging lens while printing, softens the grain.

The first image was gimp-ized, and the second image is the straight scan. Doesn't really show, but the original is quite grainy...due to the Rodinal, I am partial to grain sometimes.

I like the contrast in the pictures. I am curious, was that just you very good with a camera, or did you use some darkroom technique to ensure high contrast?

(I am perhaps too much of a photography geek)

It was a darkroom trick...polycontrast filters to pump up the contrast, plus intentionally printing things a bit dark (the paper was RC...probably Arista or maybe Ilford, and the paper developer was probably Edwal) ...some of it is also probably due to the Rodinal used to develop the film. It's been a long time since I was in a darkroom...but I think that was what I was using at the time.

The shots were also taken in a dark bar (it was the house band) with a bounced flash unit...I used the "white card" technique popular with newspaper photographers. Camera was a Minolta Maxxum with a dedicated TTL flash unit.
