Curly's Brushless Sig Tutorial

This tutorial will show GIMP users how to make a
well-blended sig without any brushing. see the
finished sig below.

Posted Image

We start out with a 420x150 canvas, and our render.

Posted Image

Now, take your render and paste it all
over the white background. Try to exclude
any part of the render that is not of the same
dominant color scheme.

Posted Image

Now, go to Filters > Noise > Pick and choose these
settings:

Posted Image

You should get something like this:

Posted Image

Now, get rid of the undesirable orange and yellow parts
by painting over them with black.

Posted Image

Run the Pick Filter again at the same settings to get this:

Posted Image

Now we begin to really build the background. Duplicate
this layer, and go to Filters > Artistic > Gimpressionist.
Choose the Furry preset, click Apply, then click OK.
You should get something like this:

Posted Image

Now, Duplicate this layer, and go to Filters > Distorts >
Iwarp. Play around with the swirl and move tools until
get something like this:

Posted Image

Duplicate this layer, and then go to Filters > Edge-Detect
> Edge. Run it at these settings:

Posted Image

you should get this:

Posted Image

Now, remember that Pick layer that we have at the bottom?
Duplicate it, and bring the duplicated layer to the top. We're
going to run another Gimpressionist filter on it, but the
preset this time will be Painted Rock. Run the filter to get
this:

Posted Image

Now, duplicate the bottom Pick layer again, and bring the
duplicated layer to the top again. Go to Filters > Artistic >
Cubism, and just click okay when the window comes up.
After that filter is done, go back to the Gimpressionist, and
choose the Dotify preset. Click Ok to get this:

Posted Image

Now, duplicate the bottom Pick layer again, and bring the
duplicated layer to the top again. (Yes, i know it's getting
old. :P ) Go to Filters > Blur > Motion Blur. Choose Linear
at these settings:

Posted Image

You should get this:

Posted Image

You must know by now what i want you do. :3 Duplicate
the bottom Pick layer again, and bring the duplicated
layer to the top again. This time, you don't have to run ANY-
THING on it! *yay*

It's now time to begin to pull everything together for the
background. Follow directions closely for the settings on
the layers: (moving up from the bottom)

Bottom Pick layer: Normal; 100% opacity
First Gimpressionist layer (Furry): Normal; 100% opacity
Iwarp layer: Screen; 100% opacity
Edge-Detect layer: Overlay; 100% opacity
Second Gimpressionist layer (Painted Rock): Screen; 100%
Cubism + Dotify layer: Overlay; 100% opacity
Motion Blurred layer: Darken Only; 50% opacity
Top Pick layer: Normal; 31% opacity

Now, run a Motion Blur on the Iwap layer using the same
settings that you used before. Then, move the top Pick layer
down once so it is second from the top. Your background
should look like this:

Posted Image

Pretty sweet, eh? A lot of depth and great colors, with no
brushes! Now, we just need to add the render. Make a new
transparent layer, and paste your render in the center.
Duplicate that layer, and go to Filters > Blur > Gaussian.
Leave all the settings alone, and just click okay. Now, set
that layer to Screen at 50%, and go to Layers > Merge Down.
Your render should look like the image below:

Posted Image

Now, duplicate the render layer, and select the lower one.
Go to Layers > Transparency > Alpha to Selection. This will
select your render. Go to Select > Feather and set it to 50.
Now go to Select > Invert. Then go to Edit > Cut. Your lower
render layer should look like the image below:

Posted Image

Now let's focus on the top
render layer. Go to Layers >
Transparency > Alpha to
Selection. This will select
your render. Go to Select >
Feather and set it to 50.
Now go to Select > Invert.

Now, go to Filters > Noise>
Spread. Adjust your settings
to match the ones shown
below:

Posted Image

After running the Spread Filter, your top render layer
should look like this:

Posted Image

Now, your render should still be selected. If it is not, go to
Alpha to Selection, Feather at 50, and Invert again. Open up the
Motion Blur Filter again, and use the settings that you have used
before: Length = 15, Angle = 307. Your top render layer
should look like this when you are done:

Posted Image

Set the top render layer to Hard Light at 100% opacity.
Set the lower render layer to Normal at 90% opacity. Add a simple
2 pixel border: New layer, Select>Select All, Edit> Stroke Selection
set to 2.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Your brushless
sig is now ready for
your choice of text!

When I try to paste the image the white background stays and it covers up everything else. What am I doing wrong?

you've got to remove the BG of the picture first. go to Layer > Transparency > add alpha channel. then take your magic wand tool and select the white BG. then go to Edit > Cut. boom, BG gone! :w:

Luki your background is good but that is a bad render choice and the text isn't very good either. I was the luckiest noob on the block when I started GIMP and had good text but my renders sucked too. I reccomend you go to gamerenders.com, most of the renders there are transparent and are decent quality. There are quite a few on WW link.

I never did finish this tutorial...every time I ran the spread filter the plug-in would die and gimp would crash. It looks bloody good though.

Great tutorial! I tried a donald one, and here's what I got.

Posted Image

I think it's okay....then I tried it with your render. Sorry, I was just experimenting, I'm not gonna use it. It seem's the darker the render, the better.

I'm stuck at the Hard Light part near the end. Where is the Hard Light option. Sorry for being such an idiot, I've only had GIMP for 3 days.

Nevermind. I figured it out

Posted Image

This is what I came out with. I choose a bad render, though.

I had trouble with this too, sadly, I was stuck with that question for months... :s: Anywho, go to Window, scroll down, and there you'll find, Layers. Click on it, and you will see every one of your layers, above those is opacity, and modes, then you are able to change the modes, to Hard light, overlay, screen, or whatever.

Nevermind You figured it out. :w:

Irritating? not for me. I somehow managed to memorize all but the render blending which I didn't do anyway, I prefer to blend my own way (stupidly).

well, in your Layers dialog, you've got a scroll-down menu of layer options.
overlay, screen, darken only, etc. are layer options. select your layer, and set it to the correct layer option.

then there's a slider in the layers dialog that determines the opacity of each layer. adjust this properly as well.
