Hi, basically I'm trying to color in an image, but I want to use a totally 1 bit palette, like this-

to get an effect similar to this-

I know the second image actually has shades of gray, but the effect is similar to what I want. Is it possible to do this in gimp? Thanks!

Yes...

- Use each as a pattern to fill a layer, so that you have all your layers stacked in order of blackness (dark on bottom, you may want to add a fully black layer there), and your image above (grayscale, otherwise desaturate it)
- In the channels list drag one of the color channels to make a copy of it
- In each of the "pattern" layers, add a layer mask, initialize from the copied channel. use the threshold too make transparent (ie, black on layer mask) all the part that are "darker" than your current pattern

You should be able to determine the thresholds to usequi accurately if you measure the equivalent darkness of your patterns first: fill a layer with the pattern, apply a large gaussian blur and use the color picker or the pointer tool to measure the gray.
