Could someone suggest a GIMP script/plugin for detection of object boundaries in a raster image and automatic creation of corresponding paths?

Have you tried making a selection of the outline, and then clicked "selection to path" in the paths dockable dialog?

Yes. If it could be possible to adjust sensibility of this tool, it would suffice. Currently I got a lot of anchors on straight lines, so it requires a lot of hand work, that is not easier than while creating the same paths by hands.
