I open a jpg file in gimp and use the crop tool. I see the cropped part highlighted and the part to be discarded as a surrounding shaded area. I am happy with the cropped part and open a file-save-as dialog through the file menu. I type in the file name and think I am done. But when I open the saved file, it looks the same as the uncropped file that I started with in the first place. What am I failing to do to make the gimp save my change? I guess the answer is that I didn't really make a change but only thought I did. So how do I actually change to the cropped image? Thank you.

So the easiest way to crop out parts you don't want is this.

Use the rectangle select tool.
Select what you want.
Ctrl + C to copy.
Edit -> Paste as new image.
File -> Export to...

Good until the last step. I get the File menu, but I am not presented an option to Export in either the new window or the old one.

I guess the last step should be:

File -> Save as -> Select File Type -> jpeg -> Export -> Save

(for instance if you want to save a jpeg)

Okay, thanks, Solartide, that gets me started.

Oh, were you not using the latest version, 2.8? 2.8 didn't let you export through the save function.

Using the latest gimp provided automatically with opensuse 12.1, namely 2.6.11. Am I way behind?

Meh, some people are sticking with 2.6, but 2.8 has a couple new features. If you're just starting the Gimp, you might as well learn with the latest version. 'Cause eventually another new version will come out, and it would be easier to adopt.

Not really.... there are of course some nice things in 2.8 but 2.6 is still good enough for most purposes. It is also more stable (still waiting for the first raft of bug fixes in 2.8).

I should have said that you can also save by typing the file extension rather than using "Select File Type".

Again, only if you're using an older version.
