Gimp 2.8's performance issues

Gimp 2.8 is great. No doubt about that. It is much better than 2.6, especially single window mode (which works better with Ubuntu's global menu and HUD).

However, there are some things that bug me and I can't find a workaround.

I work in 300DPI, on A4, at all times because of my job. If I draw something with a brush (something complex) and then attempt to cut that area so that I can move it elsewhere on the canvas, it responds noticeably slower than it did in 2.6 (same specs and memory etc).

Gimp 2.8 does a strange thing. It creates a really thick selection line (as seen in the second image). I'd love for that thick selection line to be the same as in 2.6. When moving that selection, 2.8 is significantly more sluggish in its performance.

Is there a way to speed that up (and make that thick line thinner)?
