Do you want both halves?

Typically I just use rectangular select, select the part I want, and copy paste it into a new image.

If you only want half and don't care about the other half, I suppose you can go to image -> canvas size and just chop off the part you don't want.

Hi Solartide
- yes I would like both halves or even quarters. Hope you can help me.
I am aware that one can use the rectangle tool to cut them but I have tried and failed. As I have this circle I would like to divide it either in 2 halves or 4 quarters - then when those have been created then I will be able to see a division then use those 2 equal parts or 4 equal parts are different buttons - like on this link

Create two "guides" (drag cursor from top or left rulers) and the "Image/Transform/Guillotine" to split you image in 4 images along the guides.

Hi ofnuts

Now I have two halves flying around, and I dont know what to do with them - when you said I should create 2 guides - I created 2 layers and called them guide 1 and guide2 - dont know have never created a guide before - (how do I do that) - so now I have actually 3 files around - the original one and the two halves. What do I do know. Sorry for the dump questions.

Let me clarify, you don't actually want to split up the circle, you just want to draw a line dividing the circle into parts.

Is this correct?

Something like this?

Layers and guides are different things

Hi Solartide - yes you are right - I want to draw a line dividing it to 2 or even better 4 parts, had communication problems since English is not my mother tongue - thank you all the same. How do I divide it or draw these lines?

So the original image you posted was a blue spherical object surrounded by transparent space.

I opened the file up in gimp. I right clicked the layer in the layers dialog and chose Alpha to Selection. I pressed Ctrl+C to copy the selection. I then went to Edit -> Paste as new image.

The image had a width of 246px and a height of 261px. Half of those would be 123 and 130px respectively. I took out the paths tool and clicked once above the image at 123px, and once below the image at 123px.

I made white my FG color, right clicked, Edit -> Stroke path. I stroked the path with a 2px line.

Now I had this:

Then I did the same thing to cut it into quarters.

Thank you Solartide - Done wow

Solartide I made it at last thank you - but I still have a question - why did you choose Alpha to Selection - what does that do?

You are my star.

It selects pixels according to their opacity, which in most cases ends up selecting the shape of the object on the layer.
