Running GIMP in Linux Ubuntu. Some of the normal folders are there (under user, lib, gimp, 2.0, and so on), like 'plugins' and 'python'. But there is no gradient folder (I'm missing others, but wouldn't remember what they are), meaning I have no clue how to save ggr files without it. Can I just create a new folder for them and have it be automatically detected? Why are the folders missing in the first place?
I'm really trying very hard not to despise GIMP. Some help would be appreciated.

Missing Folders, can't save things

In Linux, you don't save these things under /usr (*), but in your Gimp profile. Your Gimp profile is a directoy under your home directory called ".gimp-2.6" (for 2.6, since name depends on release used), in other words, "/home/{your id}/.gimp-2.6". You can also locate in using "Edit/Preferences" -> Folder and see where the R/W folders are (the R/O ones are those under /usr).
Caution: since it's name starts with a dot, it is not displayed by default, so if you use you usually file explorer, you have to tell it to show hidden files and directories.
(*) Windows users have the bad habit to keep additional stuff (font/brushes/patterns/gradients/scripts...) in the Gimp install tree. This is a bad idea. There is also a user Gimp profile in Windows that can & should be used for this purpose.
