Official announcement is now up on Gimp.org as well, so Gimp2.8 is now officially out!

Windows versions are still not up on the site, but I know people who have compiled it to Windows already. Not sure about Mac.

It's indeed released for Windows Users at Sourceforge Griatch. I installed it about 30 minutes ago (went ahead and un-installed rc1 before doing so). They did address (and fix) the TIF bug, but the jpeg size preview when saving jpegs have not been addressed. Also, gimprc conflict with PSPI and User Filter paths have not been addressed either (and afraid it never will). I finally did (haven't done so when I posted at GIMPUsers) verify that the brush lag issue still exists too. I refuse to disable color management so I'll live with this bug (use a mouse anyway, and, as you already know, am a filter guy anyway, so only occasionally need to do some brush work). Still, the TIF issue is worth the overwrite if you have RC1. Happy that I am now using 64-bit GIMP and won't be looking back. :)

This is a very happy day for GIMP users.
The UI just looks good and now is toe and toe with PS :D .

Very impressive for a freeware programm.

@Lyle
Yes, I saw that, linked to the Windows download in the announcement.

The JPEG error is Windows-only, right? See the bug report for the comments from the developers. As usual it's a matter of too few developers on the Windows side I think.

@satory
Yeah, good stuff! :D

The single window mode is definitely the most useful feature that the 2.8 brought, especially when you're using a tiling window manager like me !

i think to know a good workaround, the excellent Save for the web (Riot) should have no bug and is preinstalled in..

oh well i don't want spoil the surprise that will come in about 24 hours...

But if you don't want unistall 2.6 but still try 2.8 you may wish wait 1 day more...

I installed 2.8 today...haven't used it yet, but it looks very nice. At this point, I'm so used to the 2-window mode that I'll probably continue using it!

It's been really hard to like 2.8 so far, why are the defaults are so different? I've been stumbling through the non-intuitive new arrangement (for example why bury the brush dynamics in an editor when they were so readily accessible before) and finally after numerous headaches I've got the UI to resemble something familiar. As just one example, the toolbox should be open by default, we shouldn't need to hunt around to open it. If people want to close it, fine but at least start with the thing open.

And yet another example is copying a layer from one image to another. What used to be intuitive and simple, taking a single step is now a complete mess to figure out and takes three times as many steps (Thankfully someone on this forum explained how to do it when I asked, otherwise I'd still be trying to work it out)

But if this version is more stable then that will make it worthwhile. If this version ends up freezing and losing work just as much then I might as well switch back to 2.6. Or even go PS (bleah).

Edit - And I notice there still isn't an auto-save. Great idea leaving that out again.

Great job at 2.8.2, which is the version I tried out. Unfortunately, since GAP is not supported yet, I will remain with version 2.6.12 .

I agree that perhaps the ctrl+shift+e was not the best shortcut for 'export', but who knows, perhaps people adapt to it.
Also the brush dynamics are scary, they require a help reference re-walkthrough. Also, the panning when zoomed in big images seems to jag.

What I really love about it is that the scrolling up and down of the mouse wheel in my case has been associated with the brush size manipulation, and now in version 2.8.2 I can do it while holding the left mouse button, so I change the brush size while stroking, and that is really powerful.

The Toolbox and other windows being now dockable to the main drawing window is a great feature. The addition of brush tips is also wonderful.
