Hi, I want to make a animated GIF from part of a youtube video so I got the firefox extension 'easy youtube downloader' and the Gimp animation package. Im running Gimp 2.6.11 on ubuntu 11.10.
But heres what happens:

-open gimp
-video
-split video into frames
-extract videorange
When I choose the video (which is mp4) I get the gimp error message:

Execution error for procedure 'gimp-file-load':
Unknown file type

Thats it. I cant go any further, Ive searched in forums but have not found a solution.
PS The video that I downloaded plays fine in movie player.AND.. I AM able to extract frames if I choose 'M Player based extraction' instead of 'extract videorange'.
All help appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

By default Gimp won't load MP4, you have to find a plugin for this. I'm not even sure Gimp loads AVIs if you haven't installed the Gimp Animation Package.

I have the gimp animation package.
So you are saying that gimp wont load Mp4 without a plugin? Can anyone suggest one? alternatively can anyone suggest a converter and a preferred file format? (im a new user of gimp and dont know much about video)
thanks
