I am not one to come to for smudging techniques, but most people seem to use very low spacing when it comes to smudging, there doesn't seem like a bunch of good opportunities in this tag to squeeze smudging in :( Some of it just makes the sig look cluttered. Generally people who smudge in a tag make it the basic effect of the sig then add lighting and other effects on top of it :) Just so you can plan ahead if you further wish to practice and showcase your smudging :) Anywho, this tag has a depressing color scheme, try to make it pop more! :D The sig also has a good sense of flow of lighting direction, just work on the effects :) Unfortunately in this case the smudging seems to get in the way just a tad :(

Great job though, kiu!! :D

Well, I'm not quite sure about what exactly you're looking for here, but here's a small example of smudging..... lol

I suck at smudging. I think the best thing to do is just practice, practice, practice. There seem to be two wide genres, the long smooth strokes, and the curly/zigzag/crazy/flame edged pattern thing. Personally with the render you chose, I think I'd focus on making it blend in and getting some basic depth done first before sorting the smudging.

Isaac's sig is liquify, not smudging. If you want to learn smudging techniques, all you need to do is practice. always use a smudge setting of 1.

If you want to be technical about it, it was both. I was messing around with an old Wacom tablet I found in my closet, and was trying to recreate Iwarp distortions with smudge. That siggy was a mix of smudging and Iwarp. There's a reason why I posted it TO THIS TOPIC..... :P
