In this tutorial I go over how I integrate 3D elements into a 2D concept/illustration.

Overview
1. Create a sketch of the design.
2. Create a simple model of the design, using the sketch as reference.
3. Use the render of the model as a multiply layer and paint in your design below, this ensures the lighting and form is maintained and lets you focus on the design.

Render (basic, just lighting) of the model imported into Gimp and set to multiply.

Paint layer below, this is where the text, plates, designs, windows or anything else goes that wasn't modeled in the second step goes.
