I try to use eraser in Gimp, but I can't and the eraser "mode"

is disabled. It just stopped working. Any help?

Checks:

• no hidden selection (Ctrl-Shift-A to remove existing one)
  
• one layer active (you may be working on a channel otherwise)
  
• presence of alpha channel
  
• actual brush used (clipboard brush and empty clipboard won't get you very far)
  
• if using a tablet, actual tool used: you may be selecting the eraser with the mouse, but what counts in the tools you select with the stylus (there is one Tool per pointer)
