IMO this looks really flat. Can anyone help to give it some depth and more focal etc?

mmmmmmmmm
sharpen the render and blend the bottom of him in, he is the focal am I right? So he shouldn't be blurred. I'd blurr the closer part (L and R edge) even more. Try that maybe and repost.

I'd put something behind him and the background, theres nothing really separating the two.

The render and the bg don't match, as far as I can tell the render is pre smudged? The rest of the sig should follow that lead, Instad of the rednder desolve background try smudge layer of renders -> filters -> map -> displace then smudge another layer -> filters -> disorts -> warp. That should make a nice cloudy background for you to work from. I hope this helps.

Sharpen the render some more and try adding some effect C4D's.

The render looks small. And not in the right place.

The render came with effects: Posted Image
I also had to shrink it down quite a bit.
