Nice work, everyone. :h: I like the grunge background, onionguy92. That's pretty neat.
And JapJap, I think I'll take that suggestion.

to me it seems the bumpmap is too strong, the planet looks volcanic or diseased now.
Weird is intresting, who wants to be normal?

For some reason, the !Warp didn't do anything at all... just sat there and stared at me. I am working on a canvas of 500 x 500 if that means anything...

Any thoughts on this?

This tutorial worked beautifully! The only thing I did differently was to fix the shadow layer blocking the backgroung layer, I added a Select -> Grow 1 pixel, before the Select -> Invert. This elliminates the fine white line along the bottom of the planet. Again it is an awesome tutorial.

Hey Jedi. I had the same problem the first time I tried using the warp. I had to left click and move the mouse around in the preview window. Since I had not used warp before I did not know that I had to do that. I did figure it out eventually. Hope that helps.

With a couple of modificatins of course. :w:

Can any one think of a way to get realistic craters for a moon?

Thanks for your replies, everyone. It looks like my first tutorial is a success. :h:

Hmmm... moon craters... I would try this. Create a new black layer and add elliptical selections. Fill these with white. Then use smudge, pulling from inside the circles to the outside with a relatively low rate. Select circular areas in the middles of each crater and fill with black. Maybe blur a little bit, then map to sphere and use as a bumpmap. I don't know how well that will work. :a: I'll need to try it when I get a chance.

The thing to keep in mind is that the lighter (towards white) the higher the result.

Here is one I put together..

Modifications:
Clouds... Duplicated it and flipped it horizontally
Bump... used an image of craters :w:

Finally I got time to experiment this great tutorial.
Most time consunimg part was Gussian Blurr. And final xcf became about 80 MB. I followed exact steps with 3000x3000 canvas and did nto add anything my own.

here is my jpg at 85% quality just to reduce filesize.

Wow excellent use of the filters. Yes, this is definitely the best planet tutorial ever created for the GIMP.
Btw, you could create excellent result by using dirt/mud texture too. But the use of the filters to create those backgrounds is an excellent discovery. As someone mentioned, that techinique could be used to create brushless grungy backgrounds.
Very very nice job there :)
