Hiya! Here's hoping someone can help me with the following dilemma:

I hope to scan and print out high-quality copies of childhood comics pages, so I can print and frame them on my walls.

Some of the old comics have yellowed badly, and I would prefer changing this off-colour from yellow to white, with the black-and-white still being sharp.

I have done this in the post-office photocopier, and I reckon it can be done within GIMP 2.

Does anyone know the settings in GIMP I can use to convert the yellowing to sharp black-and-white?:

Here's an example of bad yellowing:

How do I get the look of the artwork to look 'newly printed' and clear, with pure blacks and whites?

You could try the threshold tool in the colors menu as

the staining/shadow on the right side might be a problem.

Not Gimp but it might be worth a look at Freds Imagemagick Scripts - there is one for cleaning a scanned image, aimed at text but probably ok for line art.

edit: now where is that cow pie

Thanks, Rich: this is an especially bad scan, and obviously any bumps, ridges, etc, are best avoided in the first place!

I'll try out your advice and report back later if I can get this to work.

Excellent results using the colors-threshold function!

However, I will need to scan in higher-res, and also enlarge the frame size of the GIMP image.

I reckon it will work fine, though!

Very good for such a bad original scan:

Here's a second attempt scanned with higher resolution:

Still some imperfections, but proof that this system has great potential:
