Very nice tutorial...I really like your avi's and will def try this out!

*tried...it came out ok, but...how can I shrink my renders and still have them come out clear. They look blurry, not crisp.

2-ton: After I resize a render, I go to Filters > Enhance > Sharpen. Then you sharpen them the desired amount, and they should be clear. If they're not, the image you're using is too low-quality, and you should start with better ones for better results.

yeah, I've tried that but I guess the photos I tried to use are not a high enough resolution. boo. Still it's a good tutorial for making cool avatar icons.

Sorry to bump an old thread but here's my outcome. I was a bit puzzled when it came to the gradient maps but I think I managed well enough. Anyway, thanks for the great tutorial.
