About an hour ago the developers have released a long-awaited new development release which is another step towards GIMP 2.8. GIMP 2.7.2 comes with all the changes that were made after GIMP 2.7.1 was released in June 2010. There’s really a LOT of new stuff. The new release comprises layer groups (which were introduced after 2.7.1), an almost done text-on-canvas feature, the all-new brush engine and of course the new single window mode.
We’ve included the 2.7.2 tarball already in our downloads section.
A build for Windows users should follow soon, we will keep you up-to-date about that. [read more]

Windows 7 users (or anyway who has a 64 bit Windows) may be also interested to this (less official but also very recent) build
http://www.partha.co...2.7.2-64bit.exe
Should be no much difference in the feature offered, as advantage is ready, has the gimp Python module preinstalled and ready to work out of the box
More may be used as portable and will not force (as usually the 2.7 "official" release ) to unistall the stable version, neither will try to import from the stable version the preferences
(that in this case is a bad idea,if so gimp 2.7 will try load also all third party plugins and scripts from 2.6 but that will result in a lot of error messages because most are now incompatible )
The link again is http://www.partha.co...2.7.2-64bit.exe DON'T use the other versions
on same side if you are not willing to manually fiddling in Windows advanced system options
The portable instead should work out of the box

I keep wondering where the "whole new brush engine" blurb originates... there is no new brush engine. Just a crapton of fixes on the old.

Alexia, i was just wondering how contact you to know more about, i hope you still monitor here.
The question is :
the work on the brush tools is now complete (at least for what planned for next stable) or other changes are planned ?

I do pass through this place now and then. For now I think for 2.8 nothing new will happen. However for myself theres one important bit short of completenes regards to brushes - flipping. Perhaps in 2.10.
