Griatch - I haven't inked the issue 1 cover yet. The issue 3 cover drawing was inked with pens and brushes.

The Issue 1 cover is looking a little flat in a couple places. My tablet set up was holding me back. I built a new desktop, enough is enough. I'm going to revisit the 01 cover before it goes to print.

When I get off Earth again you'll be like "Dude, that's not how space is." If you're not already :)

That one took a long time . . .

I've changed the previous page and replaced Khafre's sphinx with a statue of Nea-Isis, also known as Cleopatra Philopator. I was hesitant to use Cleopatra, since she has such a goofy place in pop culture, but the similiarity between her and Sina is compelling. Cleopatra Philopator was the seventh Cleopatra in a massively inbred line, she had two of her siblings executed, seducing Julius Caesar led to the death of a third, she considered herself the reincarnated goddess Isis, etc etc. After reading her Wikipedia article, I wonder if she wasn't the main reason Rome became an Empire and eventually collapsed, bringing on the Dark Ages. Did Cleopatra set the human race back 700 years? I'm no historian, I'm just googling around, but - without Cleopatra, there would have been no Caesarion (her son with Julius Caesar), and Octavion would have been the uncontested ruler of Rome. Mark Antony would have likely remained married to Octavion's sister Octavia Minor and not become an enemy. There may not have been the civil war that allowed Octavion to seize total power and become the first Emperor of Rome. Rome may have stayed a Republic, with a distributed power structure and more competent leadership than the Empire possessed. Maybe it would have had an industrial revolution in the 13th or 14th century and become what England or the U.S. became, several hundred years earlier.

The theme of going back in time and assassinating Hitler has had a fair bit of play in scifi, but assassinating Cleopatra might be more interesting. In Star Trek terms, if we had our 700 years back, Captain Picard would be 400 years in the past. We'd be sending time travellers back to study him.

I love the symbology in the second-to-last panel of this page - it's accidental, but it couldn't have worked out better. It looks like the ship is a big monster about to bite down on the little pyramid and wreck Cleopatra's world. What a nice tie-in to Sina and Rau.

--------------

After page 16 there may be a short break while I finish putting together the first volume for the printer. Due to the unevenness of issue/chapter sizes, and the amount of work it takes to make covers, I'm back to the volume plan. I'm going to throw in a bunch of concept art and such, try to get all that stuff together, and differentiate the individual volumes from the final graphic novel. At least that's the plan ATM. The volumes will have the story at an older and less polished state (what it is now), but they'll have concept art and other illustrations that the GN won't have. When I get through the end of TDDW, I may rewrite/illustrate portions of it, run a Kickstarter to have it colored and re-lettered, and get it as professional as possible, with the idea that the GN will be a significantly different product than the volumes.

It's looking like the volumes will be 130 pages each, and the GN will be 180-200 pages.

Not bad, somehow the storytelling doesn't feel as driven to me as in the beginning of the evolution part. Actually I don't know why, I looked at the last two pages once again, and actually they are well narrated, just wanted to mention my first feeling.

Also on the first post on page 8 (in gimptalk) you posted an image that doesn't exist: http://www.smackjeev...d1ab935BMFR.jpg

In the last scene of the last page I think the young musculine adult looks pretty small comparing to the other humans in the picture.

If anyone wants to follow along, I'm painting another cover @xtin.net.

The narration could have been better. I'm juggling too many things ATM.

For story purposes I wanted to draw a boy, but the Puritans have been extra crazy about comics lately, and I don't think any of us want to find ourselves on the wrong end of the pedo witch hunt. So you get a clearly-over-eighteen dude of short stature.

I redid the cover for Volume 1 and made a more awesome one. Everything is ready to go, I only have to burn the DVD's and send them to the printer. I don't know how anyone can avoid buying this.

Issue 4 pg 17 is done. It's got a few horrible medieval tortures so I'll let you go to xtin.net to see it.

It's come down to moment-of-truth time for XTIN, and most likely that means not-good-news time. I've got volume 1 ready to go to the printer but I doubt it will sell. I don't want to waste the printer's time on a book that's only going to sell a dozen copies or a couple dozen copies. Raise your hand if you really really really want one.

I'm not expecting many hands to go up, which brings me to my next unworkable idea - ransoming page releases. Yes, I know it isn't going to work. If I put up a donation bar and ask for a page rate it will be the end of the comic. I can't think of anything more I can do though. The comic has reached a pro level. There's no significant improvement to be made. The ball is going to be in the reader's court. I'm going to start closing down mirror sites and forum threads where I can't put a donate button. SmackJeeves and Comic Fury will be the only places to get new pages in the future, for as long as it lasts. Regardless of what happens I believe I will eventually get it finished. The inescapeable reality is, I will have to spend my time elsewhere, and finishing XTIN won't be a high priority, But I believe it will be finished. I won't paste the final pages to the internet, but I've got the contact info of everyone who donated, and if nothing else I can email you a zip file.

2-ton - Thanks!

It's tough to make a webcomic profitable, and XTIN is certainly a bit niche. As you say it's very well done and professional-quality craftmanship though, so I certainly wish you well with bringing it to whichever conclusion you have planned for it!

I would certainly consider chipping out for a print to support a fellow artist.

The cover does look very nice. If you haven't already considered it (don't remember if it was already mentioned in this thread), this is something which I picture would fit well into Heavy Metal magazine (I think they do b&w as well although they tend to focus on coloured works).

Well after 8 days I've got seven people wanting a print copy, so volume 1 won't be happening. Thanks for offering to buy one though.

New page going up @xtin.net shortly.

HM "might" take a short form story of a few pages from an American artist. Them's the breaks.
