Dear all,

To stop SPAM BOTS posting irrelevant links on our forum, we have implemented the following things:

1. To send a private message newly registered members must have at least 5 posts.
2. To post links in topics, one must have at least 5 posts.
3. To add a signature one must have at least 5 posts.

cheers
GT Team

EDIT: The link restriction is an issue for users needing help or who are registering just to post a tutorial result. So the restriction is lifted from help and tutorial forums. /Griatch

All that plus a sign-in captcha. I'm glad this is being taken care of. Thanks for de-spamming the place. :)

I'll help you on two conditions:
1) I try to help, but I don't know everything, and I'm not an expert, so I might not be able to fix it.
2) If I don't respond right away, it not that I'm ignoring you, I'm just busy or something.
Oh, and I edit my posts more often than I make new ones, so use the Refresh/Reload button on your browser.

I just realized. We get a lot of first-time posters who want help on/want us to make an image. Now they have to make five random posts before they can give the link they came here to ask for help with.

This isn't a big deal, but it seems like it would be off-putting to people looking to quickly get assistance.

This is a good point, and I noticed this already in the return to a tutorial as well; there are many users who only register for one post. I have lifted the link-restriction for the forums that see most non-spam first-post content, notably the help forum, tutorial forums and the art/sig forums.

Glad to hear this. One question: I realize captcha is a vital measure to prevent automated registrations, but once someone has registered is it really needed for logging in? I find sites that require captcha for logging in a real nuisance.

Thanks

There are new types of captchas that do things like showing a set of images and asks the user to click say, all the images of a cats. Maybe a captcha like that would be easier on the members and less annoying to do each login..

They can always post a link to the image, if not the image itself.

Thanks Ali, being one of those that could not sign in, I'm happy you have addressed that situation. You had asked me for a screenshot, but you had already changed the sign-in by the time I got your note, so I could not get one for you. It has been a couple days and my memory isn't what it used to be, but there was a green box that I assumed was to type in the captcha data, but it covered the captcha message so that it was un-readable.

Thanks for getting back to me, and I hope the fix is an easy one.

Now to look around and check out the changes . . .

Hi... this is my first post.
These all seem like sensible measures to me - I run my own forum and spammers are a big problem at the moment...
This looks like a good site - I hope to be able to contribute.

Gareth

Edit: the "no links before you've made 5 posts" restriction seems to stop you using emoticons!

Hm, that'd be because you're literally just linking to an image. I imagine there'd be some way to fix it...

I guess it might be possible to only allow links to gimptalk.com - it's hardly the end of the world though! <insert smiley here>

Is this rule still in place? This forum seems to be receiving a lot of spam recently. This post contains a lot of links and the poster only has 3 posts on the clock (the other two posts are also full of links).
