GIF animation: erase to transparency?

I'm trying to optimize an animation, I'm restricted to a fairly small file size and using the 'replace' frame mode makes the resulting gif too big. I am able to get inside the file size restrictions using combine mode, but I am having issues with the transparency. I cannot find a way to coax gimp into letting me erase unwanted pixels from previous frames.

Traditionally, I would deal with this by picking a color (say, 255,0,255) and specifying that color as the transparent value in the gif file, then paint with that color where I want pixels to disappear. But it appears gimp does not provide a way for the user to control which index in the colormap is used for transparency.

Is there a technique to this I am missing? I tried mucking with the alpha channel to get gimp to do the transparency for me, but I can't get it to erase previous frames.

Thanks for any advice.
