Hi Gimpers,

I'm using GIMP 2.6.11 with Windows 7 ULT and I'm having no success with the use of the JPEG 2000 plugins that I downloaded from this plugin registry webpage...
http://registry.gimp.org/node/24582

Inside the "rare_plugins.zip" zipped folder download there is a file named "jp2.exe" which I put inside my GIMP plugins folder (Program Files>GIMP-2.0>lib>gimp>2.0>plug-ins>jp2.exe)... but when I try to open a JPEG 2000 file I get a Windows app crash panel and then a GIMP message that shows the path of the plugin and the path of the file and the message, ".jp2 failed: Procedure 'gimp-jp2-load' returned no return values".

I've also downloaded a JPEG 2000 GIMP plugin from this webpage...
http://registry.gimp.org/node/9899
Here I get a "jp2.tar.gz" file which, after being decompressed, gives me a "jp2" folder that is full of files, but it is unclear what to do with this folder, since the GIMP plugins folder otherwise only contains single ".exe" files, like the one that I installed as described above that came in the "rare_plugins.zip" file that I downloaded first.

The "docs.gimp.org" page that describes plugin installations is vague and says, among other things about writing plugins in the "1.3.2 Windows" section, "...either you have an environment in which you can build software, or you don't. If you don't, then your best hope is to find a precompiled version of the plugin somewhere (or persuade somebody to compile it for you), in which case you simply need to put it into your personal plugin directory..."... see the link below...
http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-script ... ns-install

Does anyone have any experience with installing and successfully using either of these JPEG 2000 plugins?

Thanks,

digiday

Your better off using XNView (XNView can open XCF {GIMP} files too) to save as jpeg20000. Even so, no transparency support for this file format unfortunately. :)

Thanks lylejk,

Just after I posted this question, I ended up finding out about IrfanView... I installed IrfanView and the plugin package and finally I was able to open a JPEG2000 file and convert it to a large, regular JPEG file... now I've downloaded a bunch of old maps and and drawings in JPEG2000 and converted them all.

If you are interested, here are the links to IrfanView and its plugin package...

Thanks for the reference in any case.

Quite aware of Irfanview too (my main image viewer; only mentioned XNView since it can open GIMP files). I've had a lot of correspondance with Irfan Skiljan over the years. Paid money for Irfanview many years ago (1999 to be precise; use to use it at my job and had a reason to do image conversion and Irfanview came to my rescue then; only cost $19 as I recall then too and well worth the money). I continue, to this day, to get update notifications when a new version of Irfanview comes out. And, like I said, I emailed Irfan more then a few times when I had questions or comments, and he's always responded back to my emails. :)

That's interesting... I didn't know there is an actual guy named "Irfan".

Previously, when I first downloaded and installed IrfanView, I looked up what "Irfan" means and I found that it is of Arabic/Persian/Muslim origin, sometimes a given name, but otherwise meaning "knowledge or insight into the infinite and divine and having insight into the unseen."

So I thought that was probably why it was named IrfanView, since it sees all kinds of file formats, otherwise unseen by other programs.

Thanks for the info.

Xnview and Irfanview are both excellent Sw and integrate well with gimp

I prefer xnview because support Gimp file ( xcf, pattern, brush) list in a clean way PS filter (that irfanview display in a very messy way)and support better transparency

And run perfectly in Linux (with WINE) allowing to use PS filter also on linux
(here not sure if irfanview may do the same )

PS about jpeg 2000 to confuse the problem there a are at least 2 subsets of the file format

JPEG 2000-code stream , and JPEG 2000-JP 2 format and plugin that open one may fail to open the other

I am the author of the "Rare plugins" page and also of the "Gimp plugins installers for Win32" http://registry.gimp.org/node/24520
As for the JP2 plugin, I already experienced random crashes that I could not reproduce the next time I tried the plugin, but as I made several compilations, maybe some are better than the others. Also the JP2 compression is slow and uses much memory.
The other archive you downloaded was the plugin source, and obviously could not work on any system, as it is plain text;)
So, as the version in my plugins directory is working on Windows 32 with my machine, but is a different version I built in 2008 (in the archive, it is a 2010 build), I will update the archive with the 2008 version.
If you try it, try to save to JP2 first (in order to avoid JP2 format incompatibilities issues). Just set the extension to JP2. In the original source, the extension was case sensitive, but I fixed this issue and you should even be able to type jP2 or Jp2... When the slider is set to 0, it means "lossless compression". If you set it to 100, the image is gray. I also added an info tip when you drag the slider : ("0 = Best <-> 100 = Smallest")
I've just done some tests: with an original 2 Mb JPEG, I get a 10 Mb JP2 at 0 and a 500 kb file at 50, with sufficient quality.

François.

PS: As for me I copy optional plugins into my c:\Documents and Settings\Francois\.gimp-2.6\plug-ins\, but it should also work in the the main plug-ins directory.
