I downloaded your tutorial Fencepost, it looks very informative and instructive.
Unfortunately, I have not had much time the last few days to do much with Gimp.

What settings did you use to create the "ball of fire" the wizard is holding. I have not been able to get my settings to generate a similar effect.

Here's the previous image with the setting the Circle Depth Start/Finish at 270 & setting the Offset Angle Start at 0 and the Offset Angle Finish at 359)

First you run the fire animation
Next the new Polar Coordinates script with the first settings
Then run it again with the new settings.
I used a different gradient. It was red/orange/yellow and they weren't blended. Just bars of each color.
I zipped 3 gradients and uploaded them here. Unzip them into your gimp/gradients folder.
Got the wizard here. http://www.medievalf...Toys/Wizard.jpg

Here are the steps I used to create FireSpikes.
First go to the Settings Tab and set Center X and Y to the center of your Fire Ball image size leaving the other values set to the default.

Next go to the Selector Tab and click the New button and name the Gradient Flare to FireSpikes.
In the Editor click the Glow Tab and make sure all the Parameters settings are set to 0.
Then click the Secondary Flares Tab and do the same.
Finally, click the Rays tab.
Here are the settings I used:
Gradients:
- [*:2tqh4o0w]Radial gradient: Flare Glow Radial 1
[*:2tqh4o0w]Angular gradient: redorangeyellow (one of your gradients)
[*:2tqh4o0w]Angular gradient size: %random
Parameters:
- [*:2tqh4o0w]Size (%): 200
[*:2tqh4o0w]Rotation: 75.0
[*:2tqh4o0w]Hue Rotation: 32.0
[*:2tqh4o0w]# of Spikes: 30
[*:2tqh4o0w]Spike thickness: 60.0

Now that the Gradient is created it can be used with the Fire Ball image.
Make a backup copy of the Fire Ball image in case the results do not work out.
Use the Filter all Layers tool and select plug-in-gflare and click Apply Constant.
Click on the FireSpikes Gradient Flare and click Edit.
In the Gradient Flare editor clink on the Rescan Gradients button. (This will cause the gflare plug-in to create a new FireSpikes Gradient Flare each time is is called by Filter All Layers)
Click OK, Click OK on the Gradient Flare Selection menu, then Click Continue button for Filter all Layers.

Don't know where to go from there. How did you get the spikes to differ in length?
Oops! Never mind. Think I figured it out.
