I suspect that you haven't flattened your image. A flattened image is one that has only 1 layer and no alpha channel. Go to Image | Flatten Image and then save it and see if it works. If you had left it as an RGB image, you could have left it with an Alpha Channel. Grayscale images must be flattened.

In reply to your first tut, why would you have a white bg behind your brush? wouldnt it make sense to have an alpha channel behind it? It just seems like if you would save it w/ the white, the white would show up when You used the brush...

Not if it's a grayscale brush....there can be no transparency in a grayscale brush. GIMP see white as transparent. I know it's counter-intuitive, but that's the way it works. If it's an RGB brush, then yes, you are correct, the background must be transparent. Try it and see.

I like the tutorial but one question? If I make the blended text brush how do I change the size so I can use it for every sig? I want to use it alot but all sigs require different sized text.

I don't think you can resize them the same way as you would a brush you've made yourself using the brush editor, all I can suggest is to resize and save as a different sized brush.

Nevermind I figured it out. Just put it on it's own layer and scale the layer to the size you want it.

Thank you so much! I've just made about ten new brushes, so now I won't have to use others' brushes and credit them all over the place...I'm on my way to being 100% self sufficient (er, GIMP wise anyways)!!! I've got hearts, sparkles, all sorts of stuff going! :D
MWAHAHAHAHA!!!! I have discovered a way to download the old GIMP versions! YESSSS!!!

I get my old GIMP back! Whoohoo for oldschool GIMP loving teens! =P

*does happy dance and rushes off to make cool things with GIMP*

Here's my first Pipe Brush set with varying sizes. I know they're not great but I just experimenting. I used the Gradient Difference Filter and the Free Select Tool:
