This is very easy to do and gives a pretty effect.

Stained Glass Reflection Effect

[*:3rp95kov] Write some black text or make a shape and manually center it. I added a triangle and a circle to the text layer for demonstrating shapes.
[*:3rp95kov] Right-click the layer it is on and Layer to Image size.
[*:3rp95kov] Right-click the layer again and choose Alpha to selection. If you want a stroke around it, Select > Shrink > 2 or what size you want the stroke size to be. Fill that selection with what you want. If you prefer not to have a stroke, fill the whole selection without shrinking it.
    [*:3rp95kov] Unselect (Ctrl + Shift + A or Select > None).
[*:3rp95kov] Duplicate the text layer and select the bottom text layer.
    [*:3rp95kov] Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur. I blurred 10.
[*:3rp95kov] Lower the opacity to 55%
[*:3rp95kov] Use the Move tool to position the layer where you want it.

Experiment with the opacity and blurring and positioning.

The purple ball is a demonstration of using the Perspective tool to shape the reflection with a duplicated layer of the ball.

Thank you Oregonian for making this tute....
I have some brushing up to do on the colors without being messy. I have never been able to get that stroke thing to work though.. Since I used a skinny text I shrunk it 1 pixel and I tried to stroke it 1 pixel but it never works. Something for another day I guess. Anyway, here is my first one.

There's no stroking involved. The procedure makes it. Since you used slim text you just need to do alpha to selection and fill it with your pattern. Don't bother with a stroke.

Here's some skinny text so you can see how it comes out without the stroke.

BTW, did you blur your shadow? It doesn't look blurred. It's not necessary but I think it looks more like a reflection that way.

I think I did blur it but I'm not sure.

I am going to try the whole procedure again. I don't know how you got those black lines around yours if you didn't stroke them. What did the shrinking do to it?

Shrinking the selection left 2 pixels of the outside edge of the black font so that it wasn't filled with color. If you'll look at the image that says Shrink selection, you will see that the selection is inside the O and there's a black "stroke" around the outside of the selection. When you fill the selection it just fills what is selected.

Make some thick black text, Alpha to Selection, shrink the selection by 2 pixels and fill it with a color then unselect. You'll see better what I mean.

The fill for mine is a pattern that came with GIMP2.6.6. It's called Disco Mania.

I didn't know there were patterns. Where do we find them> Here I thought you airbrushed them in. I painted my first one, that is why it is so messy.

Hey, it takes a while to sink in but one thing. I don't give up.......

Click the Bucket tool and down below in the options, tick where it says Pattern fill and click the icon there and a dropdown list of patterns will be there to choose from.

Be sure to select Fill whole selection because that can be the source of a lot of cussing if you're not aware that it's not selected. It's not the default which is very annoying.

Lol thanks This could be an interesting effect say if I wanted a person to hold something transparent up to the light this could be used to put the effect of light shineing through onto that character.

O, your fill looks so translucent. Does your pattern come that way or do you use some process to make it look that way??? I haven't really added many patterns, I believe this one comes with Gimp, it was the closest thing I had to the stained glass look.

That is what attracted me to it cuz of that. I did everything the same but mine doesn't have that translucent look to it. I just did another one with that camoflage and still looks opaque.

BTW, that is very nice 2-ton
