Sadly, I could not get my image tutorial uploaded. So here is a text tutorial.

Kittens Splash Sprite Tutorial

Step 1
Posted Image
The first step is to make a gradient, using a dark color from your sprite and black. Pretty easy.

Step 2
Posted Image
Now we will need to make a new transparent layer. Paste your sprite in. Now duplicate the layer five times. Make the top four layers unviable and select the bottom sprite layer.

Step 3
Posted Image
Ok, so on the bottom sprite layer, go to filter>noise>pick. Set both randomization and repeat on a high setting. Hit ok. Then your sprite should look like mine.

Step 4
Posted Image
Make the next layer above your pick layer visible and select that layer. On this layer you need to go to filters>noise>spread. You need to then unlink the numbers and make the vertical higher than your horizontal. Once you’re done hit ok. Remember the bigger your sprite the higher that number needs to be.

Step 5
Posted Image
Now choose your third layer of your sprite. This one you will need to do filter>noise>spread again. But this time make the horizontal higher that the vertical.

Step 6
Posted Image
Now were on the fourth layer of the sprite. On this layer you will go to filters>distorts>Iwarp. Warp it however you want. Then set this layer's mode to overlay. Erase what you don't like.

Step 7
Posted Image
Make the top sprite layer visible. Erase any thing from the other layers that you don't like.

Step 8
Posted Image
Make a new transparent layer, and move it above the background and below all your sprites. Take a splatter brush and paint it with the color you make the gradient with. If you don't have any splatter brushes just google for some.

Step 9
Posted Image
Now duplicate your gradient layer and move above everything. Set the layer to lighten only.

Step 10
Posted Image
Sometimes the sprite will blend into the background to much. In that case duplicate your normal sprite layer and move that to the top of all the layers and set it at a low occupancy.

Step 11
Posted Image
Add text, borders, ect.

And you’re done

Great beginner tut to teach how to use several filters. And the background can always be individualized if one wants to put more into it.

I tried it out, it was very easy to follow, but I didn't save it. If I make a poster with it, I'll be able to post later.

I didn't understand steps 2, and then 8+. :( I really didn't understand when you said duplicate then make the layers 'unviable'. I think you mean inviable? But I don't see how that relates to this... :( anyways this is what I got from my understanding (I'm a super nub).

On step two when I say unvisable, I meant invisable. Next to the layer there is a eye if you click that it make the layer invisable, so you can't see it.

On step 8, your making a new layer and moving it inbetween all the sprites and the background. Then your getting your paintbrush tool and putting some splater behind the sprite.

Anyway your looks good. I put it in the outcomes.
