Reader must have beginner level knowledge of following 3 techniques in gimp:

[*] Inserting new layer
[*] Naming the layer
[*] Pattern and brush selection

if you dont know above mentioned techniques then CLICK HERE to read beginner tutorial first.

Tutorial based on gimp 2.2.3

THE TUTORIAL
[line]

Start with new image of about 500x300 (width x height)

Go to Layers tab, and insert 4 new transparent layers, and name the newly inserted layers (from top to bottom):

[*]noise
[*]spots
[*]rust
[*]paper
and then click the layer named 'paper' as shown here:

Now, go to main image window and draw a rectangle of desired size using 'Rectangular Region Select Tool' Posted Image, as shown here:

Posted Image

Within the same image window go through menus Script-Fu > Selection and click Distress Selection, which will display you another window asking you something to input (I am not going into depth of this window), you simply click button OK. After processing the selection, the gimp will turn it to some distressed selection, somehow as shown here:

THE CORE STEPS

Now, go to color selection in the main gimp window, and make color somehow like this one Posted Image, and simply drag it over the image window.

Go to Layers tab and select layer named rust, then go to Patterns tab, and drag the pattern p#10 Posted Image and drop it over the image window (if you do not have this pattern with the your copy of gimp then try searching on google for any stony pattern/texture, becuase I may have downloaded it from somewhere else)

Go to Layers tab again, and select layer named spots, then select a brush like this one Posted Image and select color BLACK, then within the same image window, go through menus to Edit > Stroke Selection, a new window will appear and you click the radio button Stroke with a paint tool, and click button Stroke (which is in the right most corner of the new window). To add some more spots just select some big brush with an abstract lines and spots and select paint brush tool, and do few clicks in layer named spots randomly (if you dont have such brush, then download from resources section).

upto now your image window must look somehow as below:

Posted Image

Now, select layer named noise from Layers tab, and within image window go through menus Filters > Render > Clouds > Plasma, a new window will appear, you simply adjust the desired style of noise and click button OK.

Again go through menus Filters > Colors > Colorify..., a new window will appear, you simply click button OK, which will turn the noise to grayscale.

IMPORTANT : Before going to final step it is recomended that save the selection for future use, by going through menus Select > Save to Channel.

FINAL AND SIMPLE STEP

Go to Layers Tab, select first 3 layers (noise, spots, rust) one by one and change their Mode to Overlay, from the Drop down Mode list juts over the opacity scrollbar, which is usually set to Normal, and the image is ready, see below:

Posted Image

[line]

Futhermore,

1. you may be willing to put some text over this old paper, to do that, simply insert text, and set the text layer Mode to Overlay. And

2. if you are willing to create a background shadow of your paper, then select layer named paper and in image window go through menus Script-Fu > Shadow > Drop Shadow and then a new window will appear, simply click OK.

:w: That's for now

btw images (used with tutorial) are not of best quality, becuase I don't want my forum run out of bandwidth :l:.

I hope it was helpful

regards

The font is Old English Text MT (True Type) Or (Open Type) You might have it all ready? It came with my computer. If not a good place for fonts is http://dafont.com/en/new.php
One thing with this text I did make the letters in differnt layers to make the "O" and "R" differnt sizes and lined them up before flatting image.
Hope that helps...

This paper tutorial is very cool.

Anyone have an idea on how to put rips in the paper? I've been trying to work it out but can't seem to get it. I made some paper with a tiger in it, and would like to add rips in the middle of the paper like claw marks.

I'm guessing a brush stroke if may give you an effect, not sure how good it would be though.

Maybe I need to make a brush that looks like a claw mark, and use that.

Hi, GimpRox. Welcome to the boards!

I don't have an exact solution for you at this moment, but here's a Photoshop tutorial that may give you some ideas to work with.

MyJanee.com

I know it's not the exact thing you're looking for, but maybe it will be a good springboard.

This woman provided the inspiration for my GIMPTalk.com Wallpaper that, BTW is a work-in-progress, and can be seen in the galleries here.

Maybe someone else can provide you with some additional ideas.
