Really good tutorial, Samus.
I've just started to experiment with Clipping Masks and this helped me quite a bit.
It's hard to know where to place the 'clipped effects', when you start using them.
Make this official, someone-in-charge! :)

thank you i really enjoyed this tutorial. i'm quite new to gimp but am enjoying playing around. i made an image using your tutorial as a guideline, and made changes i felt worked better for my image.
i would like to upload it for your opinion. how do i do so?

Wow that looks great. It's sometimes hard to make an LP
using a signature but you did well! I love the effects. It looks like

i'm working as an artwork and graphic designer with no official qualifications. i beat loads of people with degrees for this job. i've been using gimp for about a week or so now and really enjoying it.
