since I'm bored, I think I'll make a tutorial on my latest sig, so, here we go:

In this tutorial, I will be telling you how to make this:

Posted Image

1. Paste in a good stock. Make sure its something that doesn't have very much going on in the backround, but, isn't completely empty. For me, this stock already had some flow, but, if your's doesn't, just do some smudging, using either the vine brush with the spacing set to 0 or a hard round brush with 0 spacing and a high rate. Don't go overboard with the smudging, just something to get you started:

2. To get the primary effects started. I find with doing clipping masks, it's important to find a nice focal. The focal shouldn't be too simple, but not overly complicated. Notice how the Fett man has a lot of details in his armor, but, near his jetback, it's mostly grey. If you have an area like this on your focal, it's a good place to start with the clipping masks. Now, as for the clipping masks themselves, I used splatter brushes. I recommend NOT using big splatter brushes that are spaced out. Use small ones that have a lot going on. Obviously, you can scale down the brushes, which I have done here. To do a clipping mask, create a new layer, paint on the shapes you want, then right click the layer in the layer window, and scroll down to 'Alpha to selection'. Then go to the paths window and click 'selection to path'(third button from the left along the bottom) After that, go to select>none, hide the paint layer and create a new layer, then go back to the paths window and click the 'paths to selection' button (fourth from the left). This'll make the splatter brushes appear as empty selections, which you will edit>copy visible>paste into. Then move it around. I moved it left and slightly down, and erased parts I didn't like. Don't try to over-complicate things here, just get things started:
my splatter placement:

3. I ran a sharpen on a new copy visible layer (edit>copy visible>paste>layer>new layer) of about 30-40, and erased everything except for the clipping masks:
Posted Image

4. I did another clipping masks, making sure to keep the flow going:

result:

5. To add some interest to the effects, I pasted in a c4d, set the layer to screen at 80% and erased most of it. I kept the c4d over the clipping masks, and erased, moved, flipped, etc. anything thats needed to keep the flow. Try to make the c4d accent the clipping masks, not overpower them:
Posted Image

6. Ran another sharpen and erased in parts I didn't like:
Posted Image

7. I did another clipping mask, but, only a little on the top left, to expand the effects some:
Posted Image

8. To add some color and added effect, I pasted in a fractal. I moved it around until I found a nice place for it. I pasted in 2 more after it. All are set to Screen at 100%, and I erased most of them.:

2nd and 3rd:
Posted Image

9. I added another small clipping mask, this time to the bottom left, and did another copy visible sharpen layer:
Posted Image

10. I added another fractal, but, only to add a very subtle effect. I erased nearly all of it, only leaving a few pieces here and there. Layer set to screen at 100%:
Posted Image

11. Now that the left side is coming along, it's time to start the right side. I made a copy visible layer, and started smudging with a small hard round brush with the spacing set to 0:
Posted Image

12. Here's where I got a bit lazy. I spent many hours trying to make effects for the right side, but, eventually, I said 'screw it' and I just made another copy visible layer, flipped it horizontially, then vertically, and erased most of it, leaving only the effects that were on the left on the right side as well:
Posted Image

13. I did clipping mask on the right to add flow and give it it's own feel:
Posted Image

14. I didn't like the colors. So, I ran a gradient of soft yellow and pink (make a copy visible layer, then set the colors you want, and go to colors>maps>gradient map)
Posted Image
Set the layer to 'Color' at 29%:
Posted Image

15. After doing the previous gradient, I wanted some more blue. So, I hid the yellow/pink gradient, then made a copy visible layer and moved it up, and set it to color and about 10%. Be sure to unhide the first gradient. This is a very subtle change:
Posted Image

16. Going with the blue idea, I pasted in a bright blue fractal, having each a part of the left and right effects. Erased most of it, and set it to Addition at 90%:
Posted Image

17. I ran another gradient, this time, purple and a more saturated yellow:
Posted Image
Set the layer to Overlay at 50%
Posted Image

18. For a final step, I painted in some light orange with a soft round brush in between the Fett man and the pistol, and set it to Addition at 100%, to make a light source:

And there you go. Hopefully, though I doubt it, this helps some people. I haven't written a tutorial in a long time, so, forgive me if it's poorly written.

for the splatter brushes, I forgot which set I used, so, it's up to you to scout around for some nice ones. Deviantart has the best from what I've seen. And for the fractals, I used Greentunic's set: http://greentunic.de...ack-2-114869027

Not poorly written at all. Easy to follow :)
Great use of clipping masks and nice technique. especially being lazy and flipping the effects on the other side ;) haha

^well, then just try again. One very prominent thing about that sig is the focal is REALLY low quality. Just find a better render or stock, and, again, don't try to over-complicate it.

thanks for result and comments.

lol, I don't even know how tuts become official. This shouldn't be official, it's not telling anything new.

But you've done a good job explaining how to do it for beginners and explained everything
so everyone can at least attempt it. There is a set of guidelines for official tuts, and this meets all of them soo... ;)
I think I may move it to official after it gets a few more comments etc..
Best way to contact me is through my email.

I think this tutorial would be waaaaay more popular if you told us what splatter brushes you used, because I cannot find any as busy and amazing as those. It's a really nice tut, and telling us what brushes you used would make it uber uber really nice. *shrugs*

Might try if I find some good brushes. :)

This does indeed qualify for an offical tutorial :) if i could learn only how to spell.

Anyway, samus, would you like it to be an offical tutorial?

I don't like it when people with authority can't spell or even use spell check.
