Hi,

I searched the web and this site but couldn't get any further than this:

When I look at deviant art there are many pretty photoshop patterns but hardly any gimp ones. The photoshop patterns I download have a .pat extension and all patterns are in one file.
I cannot simply add that file in my patterns folders like you can with brushes.

So I googled and found this:
http://registry.gimp.org/node/11003

I put the .exe file (after unzipping) into my gimp plug-ins folder.

What I can do now is drag the photoshop .pat file into a gimp image and then I see a image with all the patterns as layers. Consequently I tried to save one of the layers as a .pat file and put it in my patterns folder, refreshed my patterns and it worked. The pattern is now in my patterns in gimp.

This is quite a lot of work if you want to save all the patterns.

Is there any other way to convert photoshop .pat files to gimp .pat files? Or a plug-in to make photoshop .pat files work with gimp?

Thank you,

Jolie

You can just drop any jpg, png etc file in the pattern folder and it will just work in the pattern dialog?

If so that's good news. Thanks for your answer! :)

from the help

PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF

Quote

Since GIMP 2.2 you can use.png, .jpg, .bmp, .gif, or .tiff files as patterns.

To make a pattern available, you place it in one of the folders in GIMP's pattern search path. By default, the pattern search path includes two folders, the system patterns folder, which you should not use or alter, and the patterns folder inside your personal GIMP directory. You can add new folders to the pattern search path using the Pattern Folders page of the Preferences dialog. Any PAT file (or, in GIMP 2.2, any of the other acceptable formats) included in a folder in the pattern search path will show up in the Patterns dialog the next time you start GIMP.

Thanks. Must have been the only place I haven't looked.

Noticed that on deviant art some photoshop patterns just have the photoshop .pat file and others also a folder with gifs and jpgs. So the latter are easiest to use.

First result :D :

The plugin only allow to open PS pat as images in Gimp, then you should re-save them , as gimp pat or png or whatever

and move them in a gimp pattern folder
